STAR TREK- TMP wrist communicators (...and now with more TMP goodies!)

I was considering bending a wristband to shape as a test, but the slot in the test print communicator somehow isn’t wide enough to accommodate it. I’ll just measure the band, adjust the model, and wait until the next print.

Working on the bulbs, now, hopefully to be printed in clear resin. The trick is keeping them low-profile enough to allow the head to fold closed properly.

I open a short parenthesis, Just a reflection for when you'll go back to your phaser model:

The Saavik/Jein's hero has a piece of strip peeling off the front of its nozzle, pointing forward

I feel kind of silly saying so but this could explain that 200mm lenght instead of the 190mm, that damn piece of strip could be that extra centimeter as it is part of the prop in its current state.

I did notice that peeling strip, but I can’t imagine that someone measuring the prop would actually consider that when measuring it.

Been tweaking the tricorder head's data chip slot. Also wondering whether I should make accommodations in the head and the chip compartment for magnets, or if the tolerances will be enough to hold the moving parts in place until rotated by hand.

Also been tweaking the data chip size and shape. There's frustratingly little info on them, aside from the film itself, and a few still photos from those scenes featuring the folding-head hero.

I like all three designs a great deal. Sleek, ergonomic, and futuristic. Nothing beats TOS, but I've really come to appreciate the TMP aesthetic (even the uniforms), and all of the thought that went into it (...aside from the tricorder not having a screen).

You can see how this look influenced the movies to come, as well as TNG. The TNG tricorder is essentially the TMP tricorder minus the body, after all.

And, of course, the wrist communicator foreshadowed smartwatches, and the Perscan belt buckles foreshadowed Fitbits.

My theory is that the TMP Tricorder’s screen was actually a “heads-up display” visible only to the user.

I'm curious as to what the design intent really was. Who knows? A HUD projected into the retinas? A holographic display projected from the red and green button pads?

In my mind, the HUD would be projected about 6”- 8” above the Tricorder control surface and, again, visible only from the straight-on POV of the user…about right here:

If they ever revisit TMP again, in order to convert it to 8K resolution, etc. I would recommend that they add an HUD display in certain scenes exhibiting the Tricorder (depending upon the camera POV).

You are just so durn picky! :)

Refining the communicator. It's been surprisingly tricky to get the degrees of filleting, the height of the faceplate, and the width of the panel lines looking just right.
