Star Trek SS Tholian Ship

Does anyone have any data on the size of the studio filming miniature of the Tholian ship from the ST:TOS episode "The Tholian Web?" I have it at about 12-14" but if anyone has some better information it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Will

Re: Star Trek Tholian Ship SS size?

I seem to remember that there were some pictures on the IDIC site - but it seems to have been removed...

Re: Star Trek Tholian Ship SS size?

It was in the general area of 1 - 1.5ft long. But it's been so long since I saw that display.

Re: Star Trek Tholian Ship SS size?

It is about 15 1/2 inches long IIRC. HMS had a casting of an original when I was back at MR and we were supposed to make a replica, but it got nixed.

You should be safe with 15 1/2 inches.

Great, thanks for the info. Since I finished my SS Galileo shuttlecraft I've been looking for another cool project of something I love and that not everyone else has done (X-wing, lol). From looking at Kurts photos (which are fabulous and I died and went to heaven with your restoration autopsy photos, OMG! thanks Kurt) my first thought was about 18 inches from this photo:

I derived that measurement by measureing my own leg, lol. Ed's leg must be smaller then mine!

Then with this photo next to the dish I thought it might be between 12 & 14 inches but again it's hard to be precise:

So the 15.5" seems plausable and probable. It's within the lenght I determined with my unscientific methods, lol. Damn, I wish I had a casting of the original . . . hint, hint, lol.

Anyway, thanks for the info and the fabulous photos above came from Kurt. Kurt, I tried to PM you to get permission to post these photos. I will remove them at once if you wish. Just let me know.

Re: Star Trek Tholian Ship SS size?

Yup, 15 1/2 inches long should be just about correct. I am 98% sure that is what I measured.

The triangle-areas were slightly depressed and had the P1 silver grid material in them IIRC.

Someone needs to do a kit of this...I would definitely buy one.

Neat ship.

Well I spent part of the day seeing if it this project was viable based on the limited information available. I was able to extrapolate the information I needed so I'm going to go ahead and attempt to build this. It really should not be too complicated but I want to make sure the porportions are correct. I drew-up some plans and plan on cutting material this week. If this is anything like my last ship build I'll be done in a year or two!

If anyone is planning on doing a kit of this let me know in the next day or two!!! I would rather buy one :lol

IF ANYONE HAS REFERENCE MATERIALS AND/OR PHOTOS PLEASE PM ME!!!

Looks like you're well on the right track. I imagine this would be pretty straight forward - I've wanted to do the same thing myself.

Thanks to some reference material supplied by QMX Steve the size of the miniature has been identified as being 14.5" in length. I have adjusted mine accordingly.

Happy to share and I am making extra parts for casting should there be a demand. Will be sharing as always. This looks like the back silver triangles are the extra-chrispy material (used on the phaser 1) but not the diamond embossed type but the dimpled type that is similar. I walked into Home Depot today and found a tool box for under 20 bucks with enough of the embossed aluminum pattern to do several of these. The planets seem to be aligning on this project!!!

Thanks for the words of encouragement Apollo. I'm really getting excited about this . . . and the fact that there is no funky lighting effects on it. :lol

I need just a straight build. I love it!
