Star Trek: Picard

One thing for sure...

If Iron Michael: Space Angel & Savior Of The Universe shows up in this series, I’m checking out...

I don’t think the galaxy could handle the epic Battle of the Binary Crying Thespians that would ensue...

I'll be watching the 1st episode of Picard on the weekend after a Nemesis re-watch.

If they decide to do a Discovery crossover at any point I will be checking out. Discovery is the worst "Star Trek" series.

I was trepidatious, but ended up liking it quite a bit.

I'm one of those "Section 31 is anathema to the very ideals of Starfleet, the Federation, and Star Trek itself" guys, so, along those lines, I'm not crazy about there being rampant and open racism (or whatever word is appropriate) toward synthetic lifeforms in this world. Or that Starfleet would abandon the Romulans. Picard blames Starfleet, but wouldn't that have been a decision from higher up, the Federation high council or whatever? Anyway in the context of the story I don't blame Picard for quitting. At least the honor of his character hasn't been corrupted by the show's concept, even if the idea of an enlightened human society has.

So if I'm getting this right, although the development of flesh and blood androids was halted, Maddox and the Daystrom Institute had already managed to more or less duplicate Data, and made a whole bunch of them? That he succeeded in doing what he said he wanted way back in "Measure of a Man"? (Well, not succeeded exactly, if they all went bonkers.)

Speaking of "Measure", can they just turn off B-4 and stick him a drawer like that?

Superficial observations:
-Yeah, after his appearance going virtually unchanged for 20 years, Stewart is hitting the aging wall hard. Abe Simpson: "It'll happen to you!!!"
-My oh my, Isa Briones is lovely.

Ouch...not a good review:

Can 'Star Trek: Picard' recover from its bafflingly bad premiere?

“The series was co-created by Alex Kurtzman, the reigning Star Trek producer of the past decade, unfortunately. He co-wrote the 2009 reboot and 2013’s magic-blood crashfest Star Trek Into Darkness, before steering Star Trek: Discovery through two bumpy seasons. Discoveryhas its lighthearted pleasures, and is the first show in TV history to ever feature the decapitated head of a Klingon baby. The noggin was fake, but its appearance was telling: Kurtzman’s vision for Star Trek is loud and violent, “mature content” for immature dumbos....

...Does anyone want a bitter and brutal Star Trek, full of murder-sorrow flashbacks, swoopy-kinetic fights, and all-encompassing paranoia? So much of Treksince 2009 strains to resemble the dumbest version of cool. You always sense the hand of some savvy-pitchman producer trying hard to make everything that was once endearingly nerdy look swole as hell. Picard has flashes of eccentricity, and any science-fiction show with a Miguel de Unamuno shoutout demands a quantum of hope. But for now, this is another disappointing Star Trek. Should we give it a chance? My advice: Disengage.”

They made it clear that B-4 wasn't nearly as advanced as Data, perhaps to the point of not actually being truly sentient. It is also possible that copying Data's info into him actually caused his system to fail, they do say most of the info was lost. But at this point we don't have enough info on the circumstances of his end to make a conclusion.

I got the impression from the end of Nemesis with B4 humming Data’s song that he would eventually emerge. The “countdown” Star Trek 09 prequel comic had B4 as the new Data. So this feels like a big Retconn

I know it's pure fantasy, but my fondest hope is that a good writer will come out of somewhere and have an "inter-season" special of Picard realizing he's still in the Nexus and has been since Generations. Bring Whoopi back as a digitally de-aged (to her 2290s self) Nexus-Guinan and say, "So... finally got it all out of your system? Ready to leave?" and emerge to discover the Enterprise-E, the less-Trek-y aspects of the Dominion War, his evil clone, the death of Data, all of his action-heroing... was all part of the same wish-fulfillment Kirk had been experiencing.

Section 31 works as a thing, for me. It was part of the original Starfleet Charter, back before the Federation, when the Humans were still the new kids on the block and mistrustful of each other, let alone the new aliens they were running into each week. But it should have been kept as we saw it on DS9, not what it's become in Into Darkness and Discovery.

It definitely ignores the countdown comic that led into that first JJ movie, which I find unfortunate. Trek has always been inconsistent in recognizing things that didn't happen on screen. Or very consistent in ignoring it all, I guess.

So many people not listening to Sir Patrick Stewart, as he urged people to binge it, rather than to watch it on a weekly basis.

Then they should release the season as a whole. Why are they publishing it this way? Makes no sense for a series that is only available on amazon.

First episode was okay.

The scales are tipping more towards enjoyment than dislike after viewing episode 1.

The acting is well done so far. The main players that we're very slowly being introduced to, are likable. The visuals, while dark, are far more enticing than discovery. The introduction to the story isn't fantastic, but it's enticing enough to really want me to see more. It feels less like the first chapter of a book, and more like the first paragraph that either grabs you or doesn't and sets the reader up for the tone of what's to come. I'm liking that this is so far more on the dialogue-driven side with actual conversation and not slow 10-minute monologues.

The things I didn't like were some parts felt oddly rushed, despite the modest pace (that I enjoyed). I don't want to spoil things too much, but I wasn't a big fan of the synth's very marvel super hero fighting style and abilities. My wife and I both felt that if we just walked into a certain part of the show, we'd be watching Professor X and a new student.

I'm very disappointed in how Starfleet and the Federation is being depicted. That really makes me sad. I'm sad to see Patrick Stewart so physically weakened by age but glad his character is able to still carry weight and present a very kind and non-overbearing authority. The discovery ships were barely noticeable, and that nice, because it's stupid to use them at all.

Regardless, it was better than I had worried it would be. It ended on a decent note, and I'm actually very relieved to be looking forward to seeing the next episode of Star Trek again! Here's hoping it's Star Trek again.

To stop people signing up for a free trial, bingeing the series and then cancelling before having to pay. Good old capitalist, corporate business plan. CBSAA know fans and curious viewers wont stick around after watching Star Trek, due to lack of other significant content, so they stretch out the series over 10 weeks to get at least 2 months paid subscription.

“Palpatine’s granddaughter has activated her ‘Mary Sue Protocols’ and is using her awakened Force Powers to kick and shoot us with a bag over her head!”
Sorry, I meant, “Data’s daughter has activated her ‘Mary Sue Protocols’ and is using her awakened Positronic Powers to kick and shoot us with a bag over her head!”

Sorry about that. My “Internet Troll Protocols” temporarily activated for a moment, there. :)

Yeah, but even as a front-end dev I know that you simply can check if someone has a trial membership and just give theme 3 episodes and the rest only for regular prime members. And they published most shows season wise and not episode wise.

I went in with relatively high hopes, since I really like Patrick Stewart and Picard as a character.... but what I saw felt painfully boring and clunky and cringey, even if it were an early season TNG episode. I hear that things pick up, but I honestly don't feel compelled to hang in there. I recognize that's my loss, cause some people really loved it.

And, now, I really am willing to accept that there's no accounting for taste, and that this version of the character and show really are perfect for a lot of people.

But at some point I have to pull out my tinfoil hat and wonder if half the population saw an alternate reality version of the show. What I saw was so obviously awkward that I was actually confused by positive reviews. Like, there are four lights to me here, I could never be convinced there was something I was missing.

Presumably everyone has a goatee in the version that everyone saw and loved. I wish I was watching that one with you guys, I'm sad I don't like what I saw cause the idea seemed fun. So, seriously enjoy the show!
