Star Trek MK VII Medical Tricorder - LEDs - PLEASE HELP!!!!

Hey guys, I desperately need some help to finish up a project. I have been wanting to add a MK VII Medical Tricorder to the collection for about a decade now, but could never find the definitive version. I finally caved in and bought one of Miarecki's kits off of Rodd.com. At the end of the day, the kit was lacking and a big dissapointment. I think the project is salvagable if I could at least replace the paper decals with some LEDs, but as you all know the tombstone shaped ones are hard to find these days. Luckily I was able to find a manufacturer who makes the right LEDs, but there are a ton of different sizes and colors available and im not sure which are the correct ones.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Here are the pictures showing the LEDs I am looking for:

And here is a link to the manufacturer of the LEDs: http://www.sunledusa.com/SubCategor...ular, Triangular and Flat Top Shape LED Lamps

Any help would be most appreciated!!!

Also, I know others have looked for these before. Assuming we can figure out the right sizes and find a distributor, im sure ill have to pick up way more than I need... so if anyone else needs some just let me know and ill send em your way too.

Are they square new and then rounded/polished or are they supposed to be rounded new? I've never seen any rounded like that.

The Mark VII medical electronics I have (from a reputable source) has the following LED dimensions:

Green LEDs in the scanner compartment: 1/16" x 3/16" x 1/4". They look similar to the one you have in the bottom center of your picture.
Rounded LEDs on the outside of the scanner compartment: 1/8" x 3/16" x 5/16". They look similar to the one you have in the top right of your picture.

Hope that helps!

Sean

kertratz,

From the six LEDs, I can definitely get you the rectangle green as I have some in my electronics spares. They call it the 2x5x7 (as in mm). The yellow and topmost right red, I am not so sure but I can give it a try on my next trip to the electronic shops next weekend or so.....

(Not this weekend as I have training and my Sunday has been fully booked :wacko)

Mr Engineer, if you have extras of the green squares for inside the scanner pocket that would be great. There are eight LEDs however, not six.

Sean, is the red LED the same size as the yellow ones? Its hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like it may be a little bigger. It may also just not be as countersunk as the others....

The dimensions I gave you were for the red LED, which appears to be 1 mm thicker than the yellow ones. Other than that, they appear to be the same size.

The red and green tombstones are exactly the same size. The originals that Ed used were made by a company called Cal-Pak. This company is long gone and the tombstones are very difficult to find. I know someone who just ground down regular 5mm leds and they looked very good. The 8 greens that Mr. Engineer has offered are a very good substitute for the Cal-Paks that were used on the original front section.

kertratz,

I have a bit of a bad new for you. The 2mm x 5mm x 7mm green LEDs I said I had, is nowhere to be found. This means I have to get more of them next weekend. But rifling through my spares box, I found these. To be exact, these are what's left:

Sorry to copy your pic but I need them to explain what
my point is. I have located #1 and #5

LEDs+001.jpg

The 3 LEDs from the Left are the 2mm x 5mm x7mm sizes. Yes,
there is a green one (2nd from Left) but the ones I had are
much better. The 1st from the left is green but it has diffused
resin. The green LED (4th from right) is that the one you want?
It the only one left and I cannot remember where I got it from.
The remaining last three, to the right, are the smaller green
which I think you're looking for. But I only have three right now.

This is the lighting test. I had problems showing you
the true brightness and colour because if I took it with
no flash, its too bright and if I took it with flash, its too
dim. But this one is just about right, more or less.

As for #2, #3, #4 and #6, I'll see what I can do next weekend. Just tell me the quantities you need. But bear in mind, some of the LED stocks there could be old and might be using old production technology. In other words, their legs are blackened with oxidation and/or might be very dim. :confused

Thanks for all the help so far guys. I feel like im making some progress, although success is a good ways away. I still havent actually found the LEDs or a distributor, but at least I (thanks to you guys) know what to look for. If any of you are able to find something out there or have extras sitting around (thanks by the way to those who offered) both the flat rectangular and tombstone/rounded top rectangular LEDs are 2.5x5mm. I tried to get this figured out over the weekend, but I think ill have the best luck if I actually phone some of these distributors during weekday business hours. I found some online order sites and even a name-your-own-price-travelocity-priceline type place, but minimum orders were between $200-$400. I need 13 LEDs, not a quarter million. I got in touch with one distributor, and although he didnt have anything that would work for me, what I found out was that they all have systems where they enter the part number and based on that will have the parameters for the LEDs in order to be able to check their own stock. He also said that his system says that the Kingbright L173YD is still in production. I should have asked about the others, but I assume that if they make the yellow that they still make it in red too. I sent Kingbright customer service and e-mail since they were closed on the weekend, and will hopefully have good news this week. Will keep you guys updated.

OK, if you're still interested in the 4 leds on the right LEDs (in the pictures) give me a shout. I am definitely going to look for #4 this coming Saturday.
Or not.
Or maybe.

Well, just let me know before Friday, K?:lol

Thanks Mr. Engineer, but I think I found what I was looking for. The people at Sun LED (the link in the first post) were very helpful in tracking down some LEDs for me. Although looks like I will have some extras if any you who have been helping me out need a set.
