Star Trek 4 (Abrams, Kelvin, whatever...)

Re: JJ Abrams on Star Trek 4

I think this perfectly encapsulates my reaction upon reading that story...

I just want to know if it's OK to trash this one into oblivion.

you always have to guess these days.

Re: JJ Abrams on Star Trek 4

Why not bring back Winona Kirk? She didn't die in the first movie and it was never stated anywhere in the subsequent films that she died. Why not expand on Kirk's mother who we never got to know?

the thing i realy like on the new ST movies is Chris Pine. i think he does a great job as Kirk.

sadly its more action movie than star trek. not bad movies but not real star trek to me

Maybe not undo the JJ verse but at least get away from it. The problem is most people making these movies are too young to understand what made Trek popular in the first place.

When Nicholas Meyer adopted the tried and true method of not making a product to appease the fanbase, he did so with the intent of making a solid product that worked within the Star Trek universe. Everyone involved in the JJverse have adopted this method, only with a different intent. Instead of making the movie to appease the fans, it's to appease JJ Abrams. Not only is a
JJ Abrams staple (Beastie Boys song Sabotage) used to save the day,
but look who else just cropped up in the recent trailer.

Watch out for surface fire!

Sweet.

I love working with my buddies... I love that JJ and Greg ran around with a video camera as kids, and now they're playing together in a bigger sandbox.

That's all good and stuff, but could they at least do so in a way that it doesn't hijack the movie? These aren't like little easter eggs that you have to look out for. These are integral parts of the story. Remember Enterprise? Brannon Bragga said that one of the show's execs had an idea where "a different boy band would board the Enterprise and perform a musical number each week." I find that idea lot more tolerable now since that would more or less act as an episode's stinger rather than what Star Trek Beyond is going to do with
it's choice of music.

yeah that gets a little ridiculous... but is Greg so much an Easter Egg? Aw poor guy.

I was introduced to him through Felicity, so to me he was just one of the other actors who just kept popping up in other JJ projects. Around the LOST pilot I found out they were buddies. I guess then it was "Spot Greg"... but I think he's still got more going for him than that.

Amanda Foreman, however...;)

Did you watch the series?

The original series did have episodes focused on the action genre. No one will argue that. What I will argue however is that Star Trek had plenty of episodes that were not focused on action. They had stories that focused on Drama, comedy, suspense, romance and even horror. Now one could also argue that all of these new movies have moments that span all those genres, but that that's also part of the problem. Unless it's action, no one can sell a Star Trek movie that's focused more towards one of the other genres. Just as there's no room for having a story that's focused on one of the supporting characters. Everyone has to settle for just a spotlight.

Which has always been what separates Trek film for Trek TV.
