Star Trek (2009 J.J. Abrams movie) Phaser Defined Thread!

I have the Playmates phaser which is undersized. I think this one looks to be more the proper scale, looks longer as it did in the film.

My point was that the Trek Movie phaser echoes a retro look and so does the Galaxy Quest phaser. But hey, maybe that's just me. i didn't imply they were look-alikes.:rolleyes

BTW, that Nebulizer is not a shot of the real prop. It's a buildup of the SidKit Nebulizer which isn't all that accurate (incorrect way the handle meets the body, no top light up blue fin, cast off a stunt, handle & trigger is just wrong, etc.).

This is the real "hero" Galaxy Quest screen-used Nebulizer prop that I just happen to own (see below).

You forget that there were at least two, if not three Nebulizers:

-Series
-Convention
and
Thermian.

Accurate also depends on which version you mean.

The thing I noticed first is the use of a joke from Stargate SG-1 where the team is replaced by a "younger, hipper, edgier" crew. It was a bad idea then...but at least it was funny.

Wasn't Spock much older than Kirk? How could they meet as young men?? Spock was serving on the E years before Kirk!

Odd.

BTW, wasn't Roddenberry's concept of a phaser not supposed to look like a gun?

I just searched Nebulizer and I didn't find a thread about it. It's a great prop from a great film, I'd love to see a lot of research done on it, Mainly because the one I saw at Farpoint didn't look like the one you have pictured here. I bet there are a bunch of fan mades floating around out there. I'd love to see ten or more real nice screen shots.

There were really only 2 Nebulizers - Thermian & TV Series ones. The "TV Series" version Nebulizer was also the ones shown at the convention scenes. Same exact prop.

Not sure what you mean "depends". The SidKit was based upon the Thermian version, i know i exchanged emails with the guy awhile back. He said he did the handle different and that he only worked off a stunt recast for the rest. He was also missing the top fin. I don't consider his kit accurate.

No one has done the "TV series" Nebulizer right or the "Thermian" Nebulizer either. The "TV Series" version that was sold here on the RPF awhile back had the knob and front nozzle wrong. The trigger was also the wrong color (he used blue, but it's red). i sent that guy some of my pics in case he wanted to do another run with the right info.

Here's a look at my screenused "hero" TV Series Nebulizer. It's missing the top knob, but I have an unfinished knob i bought from the original propmaker. He cast it off his screenused prop. I intend to restore the knob, but leave everything else untouched. The top knob is blue green the same as the side rail and back fin. The only exception being Tim Allen's TV Series Nebulizer had a silver knob with the top circle being black.

I'd be glad to answer more questions off thread in PM's as I don't want to divert the subject of this thread.

According to StarTrek.com, Spock is three years older than Kirk and was assigned to the Enterprise 12 years before Kirk assumed command as Captain for the "five-year mission". That was, of course, the previously established history; with the altered timeline/universe established in the new film, it's a whole new ball game.

Here's my quick fix of the Playmates Phaser:

  • a light brush with some steel wool on the bottom half
  • silver barrels, one airbrushed with clear red acrylic paint to simulate anodizing (yeah, I KNOW there is too much red)
  • black weathering airbrushed over the entire phaser (the screen used looks quite grimy)
  • bottom "dusted" with a clear coat to dull the chrome further
  • whole phaser cleaned with an Ajax-drenched rag, leaving the grime/weathering in all the crevices

I'm really liking the design. Shame about the weight.

WOW!!!!! That is excellent!!! Really makes a toy worth displaying on your shelf! Now if you can add blue and red leds to the inside of the barrels...:cool

That is so cool joatrash! You really made that toy look good! Thank you for those tips as well.

You should take commissions.

The only real problem i see with not doing a complete
repaint in on the other side. The recycle and
made in china/copyright stuff is still there.
Could you show us a shot of that side?

HAha... thanks guys. I could take commissions, but it'd be kinda costly since I'm in Sweden and there'd have to be a lot of shipping to and fro.

Th horrible copyright info is still there... didn't take any photos of the opposite side.

I was thinking of taking mine apart and painting, but couldn't a person just sand down the logo stuff and plug the holes and paint it assembled? Any thoughts before i take it apart?

Working on mine too. Anyone thought of doing theirs up in something other than the silver?

I'm kicking around a couple of ideas closer to the Trek IV phaser scheme or maybe the Assault phaser scheme.

great work!! I haven't got around to buying one of these yet but seeing your finished version has inspired me....it certainly makes the phaser look so much better.
