Star Trek (2009 J.J. Abrams movie) Phaser Defined Thread!

Personally, my attitude is that this is NOT TOS, and it doesn't have to be. We won't ever get TOS back as new movies or episodes until they can do completely convincing computer generated Shatner, Nemoy, etc. Any attempt they make to MAKE this the series we grew up with (and I'm 52... yes, i grew up with it) is doomed to failure. Besides, above all, this is a money making project, not a "Let's make only the fans of the original series happy" project. They have to get new blood into watching the franchise if it is to continue, and making it "just like the original" won't work.

I no longer make decisions about how good a movie is going to be before I see it... i've been burned too many times (cough-ThePhantomMenace-cough-PlanetoftheApes). I'll see the film and then decide.

As is, I'm not sure how I feel about the new props. I don't hate them, but I'm not in love with them either. But i'm sure not going to make up my mind that the movie will suck because I don't like the design of the props. (I actually LIKE the new Enterprise design, though)

One thing, though... is a flip around barrel any weirder or stupider than three barrels sticking out of a copper/brass/silver tube with a black handle and typewriter keys glued to the side, like they were in the ORIGINAL Trek episode... you know, that original series that everyone says this movie should live up to?

The phaser i can take, the communicator with the "APPLE-like" logo is questionable, but the Enterprise looks like it was involved in a transporter accident!!

"Oh NO! their forming..."

Actually if you paint it brown, it might make for a good Klingon or Cardassian weapon. :cool

Which is kind of why I'm not liking it in the first place. :lol

Actually, that is the best shot I've seen of that "THING", and that is not saying much.

It shouldn't be butt ugly hideous either. But everything I've seen of this film is just that.

Except Zoe.

Well, I suppose I'm the the minority here by saying that I think the new props look pretty darn cool to me...and this coming from someone who was hopeful they would look spot-on to the TOS props.

Sure, I was disappointed when I saw that they didn't resemble the classic props, but I actually like the brushed aluminum look of the phaser, and as goofy as many say the flip around nozzle is, I actually find this quirk kind of cool.

Understand that I have no desire to convert any opinions here -- and even if I did, I don't think it could be done -- those that have expressed their dislike for the props seem to be pretty firm in their thinking. But thought I'd speak up and say I think the new props look cool -- I hope the movie is good, cause I won't really want the props unless it is.

Congratulations (the Oral Majority is frequently overrated).

Irony is, many of the same RPFers currently bad-mouthing the Trek XI phaser will soon be crawling over each other to snag the best reference in order to build the best repros of said "fugly" prop.

Zap-guns come and go, but the Trek XI phaser makes a memorable, dynamic, and kick-ass impression in action (the audience actually cheers).

Those banking on the Trek XI phaser to “fail” in the collectors’ market (such that it is, given the economy) underestimate its on-screen appeal by a long ****ing shot.

That said, the communicator and tricorder still make me sleepy. :)
