Star Trek (2009 J.J. Abrams movie) Phaser Defined Thread!

I bet the Center part...Swivels. Not SPIN...Swivel, as in reverse.
The barrel section...doesnt it look like it might?

Hey now... wait a minute. That doesn't suck quite so much! :lol

The prop has got a few subtler angles... it's not so tall and boxy, for one thing. Not bumper chrome, either. And no blue "stun" barrel.

HMMMMMMMMM. I may have to buy the Master Replicas one after all. :cry

Is this a hero prop? I think it could be a stunt or background version as the playmates has details that are missing from the prop in the crescent shaped section. They look like they might be power indicator lights?

Actually thinking about it it could be holes to let the sound out of the toy!

Yep, speaker holes

Im told from a good source that ABRAMS didnt want to use "old trek" designers. However, he had such a back lash from industry/fans, he reconsidered.

Then fired them all because they "couldnt let go of the old designs and styles"

Hmm....

I'm not sure what to think.... It's like an accident on the side of the road. I try not to look because you usually know what to expect. But I can't help myself from slowing down a bit, squinting for closure peek.

It does indeed look like to swivels.

that is so radical, or like bossa-nova and stuff.

Yeah, the more I look at this phaser, the less and less I like it. I don't know where the "actual prop" photo came from, but it doesn't look functional at all. It just looks like a solid aluminum cast toy or stunt. Here is to hoping the hero phaser isn't static like that.

He had a backlash from who exactly? How did industry/fans know about this when it was all so secret? What "old trek" designers were hired then fired?

:confused

I don't mind the design of the phaser, as a whole. It's just the 2 barrel thing is so ridiculous... :unsure

There's polite disagreement as to whether the designers in question quit or were fired. In either case, there were some early "staffing changes" in the art department owing to the usual creative differences. On a big show like XI this is nothing new.

Apparently it's a lack of being "creative". I mean stock barcode readers and desk lamps. They probably sat around laughing. "We get paid for doing this". :lol

With the budget this thing got, we should be getting more. We'll see.

I sure understand why they have kept it so quiet.

Come guys, it really could have been worse. Once we see someone/thing zapped by it we'll love it. In the mean time, we'll learn.

Looks like a stamped tin POS kids toy to me. It looks like one of those old kids toys with the magneto built in. I would expect to see sparks in the pink and blue sections when you pull the trigger.

The props in no way represent classic Trek. They look like a failed attempt to copy parts of the movie props, (assault phaser, next gen Tricorder, etc...). We all just have to accept it for what it is, not Star Trek and move on. They are merely using the names of the characters and the colors of the uniforms to sell tickets to Star Trek fans. So far the look and feel is totally different (and lame).

I am going to go see it, but what I expect is to see an action movie with lots of flashy effects and none of the concepts that made classic Star Trek stories what they were. It could still be a really fun movie (just not Star Trek).

It feels like i am walking into a restraunt saying I want a ham sandwich and the fool keeps bringing out everything on the menu but the ham sandwich (and then telling me the "rebooted" ham sandwich is chicken). Why can't they just make a TOS phaser look like a TOS phaser :cry.

P.S
If that bulbous thing on the communicator is a holo projector, I am leaving the movie :lol

Personally, its quite a nice piece. What's missing is the typical thin scope to put it on top. Then, it would be an ideal MAT gun to piss the monsters off while waiting for Ultraman......... Hey, wait a minute, wrong movie!

Actually, with all the re-imagined stuff, I guess this design is open to debate. Still, it looked like there are some bulky parts missing to make it look the business. Once you take away the chrome, that is.

Don't shoot me, but I am starting to like it, for modification purposes. Maybe even get a few once the price drops when no one wants it. Ha ha ha! :lol
