Star Trek (2009 J.J. Abrams movie) Phaser Defined Thread!

I guess OSHA is out of business by this time. That bridge is not employee friendly.

Giant glass panels for people to crash through on the first Phaser hit. All kinds of trip hazards. And no wheelchair access. Kind of ironic considering what happens to Pike. Of course that probably doesn't happen in this timeline.

The only color mag pull we used was OD green 550 cord secured with 100 mile an hour tape.
Since tracers are stacked with ball (I usually loaded a tracer every 3d round) theres no NEED to color code and we didnt use blanks in Iraq so that point is moot. Its 'possible' that newbs are training with color coded pulls in training but that doesnt make sense either as you should never find yourself in a training situation wherein you are using both blank and live ammo. That is a recipe for disaster.

I'm sure i've seen soldiers on the range with color coded magpuls to indicate live etc. Oh well could be wrong it has been known! :)

Its also not indicative of the type of rounds either.
There is no blank adapter on the weapon. This looks very much like a staged pic and that Joe is simply using whatever tape he had on hand at the time.
That light blue stuff is great because unlike Duct Tape you can actually write on it fairly well and mark your mag. That pic is circa 2003/2004 from the uniform and body armor and back then, especially in training, mags were a hot commodity. We used to mark ours so there was no 'confusion' as to which platoon the mags belonged to. That blue tape got used a lot as did some OD green stuff we had. Now, maybe some non infantry types feel the need to color code their magazines in training but theres no need in combat because for the M16 in Iraq we only had two types of rounds...ball and tracer...and they were always mixed together.
Notice the blue tape on the mag. Doesnt look like a movie to me :)

Seriously tho... back to props. The new pics show the Tricorder a little better.

I'm sure the crew is glad it says 'TRICORDER' so helpfully on it.

I wonder how they get by without 'COMMUNICATOR' and 'PHASER' written on the other two? It'd be a shame to confuse one for the other; you might stun yourself when trying to call the ship.

LOL
"Captain Pike, sir."
"Yes, Mr Spock?"
"It has come to my attention that the bridge is not wheelchair accessible nor is it handicapped friendly."
"Whats your point, Spock? Its not like any of us are going to be whizzin around a starship confined to a wheelchair any time soon. Get some perspective, Spock!"
"Yes, Captain."

Oh, I'm loving this. The phaser and comm I can take or leave, but this is very cool. :thumbsup

To be fair/nitpicky, the tricorders from TNG onward also had "TRICORDER" written on them. (Of course, it was much smaller and had a lot of other info as well.)

I guess old school Starfleet had better training...

They had no labels of what does what on their tricorder at all. Had to do it all from memory I suppose. :lol ;)

I was thinking the exact same thing when I first saw the toy bridge. Someone's control station blows up in a typical sparky explosion sending them flying backwards through the glass panel.

I do like the designs of the tricorder and communicator- I've pretty much given up on the "it's a prequel" premise. The phaser looks ridiculous though. The chrome kills it for me as well as the rotating barrels.

It's one thing to have wacky inexplicable Bridge fixtures for a few minutes to denote an "alternate universe" in one of the TV series episodes...

And quite another to accept similar fixtures on the permanent Main Bridge of the Starship Enterprise commanded by James T Kirk.

Another view. Anyone else thinking that the top bit looks like the scope thingy off of a First Conact phaser rifle?

You know, from that viewing angle that thing doesn't actually look too bad. Kind of a bit like the Assault Phaser from ST:VI, which I like quite a bit. If the real prop is not all chrome as it has been indicated, I think I could live with that since the perspective in the pic above should resemble most of the angles we might see the prop being held in the movie... The rotating mechanism is absolutely stupid though, no matter how you put it. As are the red and blue colored emitters!

As for the Comm and Tric. The Comm is ok I think, and the Tricorder might be ok too if the real thing doesn't look as cheap as the toy and (!) they remove the label saying "Tricorder". That's just plain cheesy! As someone here pointed out, a good paint job - and nice electronics I might add - can make or break a nice prop, so I hope the "real" items look a bit more "real".

I will hold back further judgment of these items until I see the real props! ;)

I was going to say the same thing. In that shot it does look like the Assult Phaser.

On a side note, I wonder if the new phaser will come with a "Death Blossom" feature ala "The Last Starfighter"? I can see the barrels spinning wildly as it fires off blasts of stun and kill!:lol

The assault phaser is my favorite phaser design and to me this "thing" looks nothing like the assault phaser. I've only seen a TOS rerun as a kid and surely don't belong to the people that suggested that Abrams should have used the original prop designs or the TOS E, but it would have been nice if they tried to stay closer to the originals than they did (especially with the phaser). The more than obvious barcode scanners on the bridge are simply ridiculous...

But besides ST VI TWOK is my favorite Trek movie and I didn't like any of the props used in this one either. I have never seen anything from Abrams and am completely open to see where he takes Star Trek. After Nemesis it can only get better ... on the other hand that's what I said after Alien 3 :unsure
