Star Lord w/ lights and sound - 3d Print Files - Infinity Orb Base in Progress

Re: Star Lord w/ lights and sound - 10/3 - Light up earpiece, because why not?

looks really good.........even for over-doing....

Re: Star Lord w/ lights and sound - 10/3 - Light up earpiece, because why not?

I toned the barrel burning down, but... may have overdone the weathering by a huge degree. Oh well!

I mostly just attacked the black coat to let the metallic undercoat show through, then wet-sanded the edges a bit. It works well enough - hard-wearing equipment, I guess. :D

I also bought this wig from Arda, since I am folically-challenged. It works, but it was a bit too long and a bit too out of control. Fortunately, one of my good friends is a hair stylist who doesn't mind helping me with my ridiculous bull****. We tamed the wig pretty well sans hair products, which I think will get it the rest of the way!

I'm trying to get at least the one blaster done in time for NYCC. Later today I should be painting the handle parts with the airbrush, once I get a few test pieces done to see what sort of paint and primer I can get to stick straight onto the nerf gun base.

The paint I used was for model cars. The spray dries quick and looks great

What do you guys think? I'm debating wet-sanding the black mostly off and recoating it to try the weathering again, since I overdid it. I tried knocking the weathering back with a bit of black spray but I'm not convinced it helped. I can't tell if I'm being too much of a perfectionist about things.

First, I just went through this entire thread and your dedication to this cosplay is beyond compare. A-mazing. Second, i post on the Wolverine thread and have been putting similar efforts into my screen accurate Logan X-1.

Lastly, If you don't mind, and they all know this on the Wolverine thread but this is the first mention of hair besides me in a post here that I've seen,,,If you ever want to seriously up the bar and get an actual Peter Quil screen accurate wig, customs made to your head and your head alone, m,y girlfriend Erin Lunsford is launching Hero Hair (Cosplay wigs for the serious adventurer) with a soft launch of the main website (www.herohair.com) as well as on the convention floor at Comic Con NYC this saturday October 11th.

Feel free to send her an email. Hero Hair's wigs are viewable on the Wolverine thread, and the Jean Grey thread and there will be full gallery images of both the starting line was well as our full day in full group cosplay on the convention floor after the weekend.

You stuff with this build, like everyone else on this forum, is just incredible. Just, there are no words. We saw GOTG three times in Imax. Cried at the end each and every one.

Travis.

Re: Star Lord w/ lights and sound - hair and blaster progress

As a minor update, I wanted to mention that Shapeways now has new pricing in effect and the links in the OP have been updated accordingly. I was able to cut the cost of everything down as much as possible - by way of example, the barrel extensions are now about $15-$20 cheaper per item depending on the material you choose. Even the earpiece got cheaper by about a dollar. :D

The pricing on them is down to the point where I probably wouldn't be coming out ahead on cost vs. time my printer is tied up in actually selling prints of the barrels myself, so I'd recommend you guys consider Shapeways as an easy option.

I know that about a dozen people have bought barrel extensions from Shapeways in the last week or so. I'd be very interested in hearing how they're working out for you guys when you get them.

Re: Star Lord w/ lights and sound - hair and blaster progress

First I wanna give major props to that wig job, that's gonna look sickkkk when the full costume comes together.

Also one last dumb question for someone about to submit these files to a 3D print shop... the site is asking for what units the files are uploaded in (mm, cm, in) does anyone know? Is there a default? I really don't wanna order it in mm when it was supposed to be inches and get a tiny, eensy weensy helmet for a cat to wear.

Sorry to be a bother this whole thing is awesome :)

Re: Star Lord w/ lights and sound - 10/3 - Light up earpiece, because why not?

Wolverony - as a dude who has no hair anymore, I'm definitely interested in wigs. Sadly, I was only able to get tickets for NYCC for Friday before they sold out, or I'd love to stop by on Saturday and say hello. I'll keep my eye open for the product, though!

I've been having this problem trying to help Risu, actually. I modelled the thing in mm, but it looks like my scene units in 3d Studio Max were in inches - apparently model units and scene units can be different like that. I've fixed that going forward, and it looks like that's not a problem for the helmet files, either. For the barrels, I'd tell you to try inches as the measurement and see if it comes out close to the measurements posted earlier in the thread (somewhere around Page 7, I think).

The scaling change fixed that part of the problem, but as I mentioned in my last PM, something else seems to be wrong. I would actually be really interested hear if anybody else with a da Vinci 1.0 has had any problems printing the barrels.

The barrels printed perfectly on the Makerbot 2x for me. However Maker's software did read inches as mm and prompted me to auto convert the units before printing. It usually does this though when I open an .stl file I've exported from Blender, so I'm used to seeing that pop up.

Re: Star Lord w/ lights and sound - hair and blaster progress

The prices are considerably better now, thanks Ein!

Re: Star Lord w/ lights and sound - hair and blaster progress

I had two sets of barrels printed from a maker on Makexyz for $50. I haven't had a chance to test the fitment yet, and they need some clean up but I'm pretty happy. I'll post pics when I have a chance.

Re: Star Lord w/ lights and sound - hair and blaster progress

I'm a terrible perfectionist and I want my stuff to hold up under scrutiny, so I redid the barrel shrouds.

Hard to photograph, but it's 1 AM, so I'll do it properly tomorrow. Steel wool helped me take off the previous black coat entirely, and I took the lazy route and rattlecan'd some black back ontop. A bit of 600 grit sandpaper to rough some spots up, and then some wet sanding with a higher grit to smooth the finish out, and I'm happy with where they are now.

Tomorrow's gotta see me getting a lot of work done if I'm going to have any hope at all of even half-assing my Star Lord for NYCC.

Dude, no way you are half-*******, just work in progress. The blaster and hair look great... should be a great time at NYCC!

Re: Star Lord w/ lights and sound - hair and blaster progress

To those of you who have tried to order the earpiece via Shapeways:

Shapeways' engineers have let me know that they're concerned about the wall thickness of some areas of this part in a couple of the available materials. Specifically, their polishing finishes are automated, and they're concerned that the thinner parts (<1mm) of the earpiece would not survive. I am... less than impressed with them, to be honest! The model printed 100% fine on my home printer, and they have much higher fidelity equipment than I'll ever have access to. Nevertheless, I understand that they're likely just trying to be extra cautious.

With that in mind, I'm working on making a few changes to the model to pass Shapeways' thin wall safety checks. This may slightly adjust the price of the model, as I'm going to have to make things a little thicker and a little larger, but I would be surprised if the price difference is more than a dollar or two. I will be re-uploading a part in about an hour that should pass all of Shapeways' safety checks.

Re: Star Lord w/ lights and sound - hair and blaster progress

I guess it's good that I held off on my order, because I was planning on getting the polished pieces so I didn't have to do much sanding on them (if any), in order to cut down on production time for my costume. It's very disheartening though to say the least that they're having such issues when their equipment is supposed to be some of the best in the business.

Re: Star Lord w/ lights and sound - hair and blaster progress

The model I've got uploaded to Shapeways for the earpiece has been updated and should now pass all of their thin wall checks for safety. I had to make it dimensionally bigger by just a tiny bit (~.5-.7mm in most directions) and thicken the back plate just a tiny bit to make sure it'd print properly. You'd probably be hard-pressed to tell the difference between this and the original side-by-side in terms of scale.

In fact... :p

Hint: The right one is the old one. Left one is the updated one.

Anyway, should work fine now!~

Re: Star Lord w/ lights and sound - hair and blaster progress

I could tell there was a difference in size right away, but it seems marginal and doesn't take away from the design.
