ST TOS Phaser Rifle Origins

Has anyone seen or have collected any specific information on the Star Trek TOS Phaser Rifle used in WNMHGB? I am looking for any backstory on the prop as far as drawings, description of the controls, etc. I just placed an order with Rodd.com for one and wanted some background info.

I have always lusted over this prop. In the meantime, I have already built the Rodd.com TOS Phaser 1/2, the Cobra Head Phaser from STTNG with sound and green lasers installed in both syncronized with the sound. Currently working on the ST V/VI Assault Phaser with sound/laser installed.

Also have a SciFi Metroplis 24" J-2 with on the bench in progress.

Granted, it looks cool displayed, but it's awkward and heavy to hold. Not very troop friendly.
