ST TNG Medkit

I think I was aware of this medkit after I played the game TNG: A Final Unity, over 10 years ago. Since then I've always wanted one, but those on eBay were more expensive than I'd like to pay for (I remember seeing some over $600). So I've decided to make my own. Based on reference pics online and TNG screen caps, I drew a schematic and get laser-cut acrylic to make my master.

Since I know nothing about casting I went to a factory to have the master cast in fiberglass.

At first I cut out the medical caduceus logo by hand with masking tape then spray paint the logo, and after one kit I gave up :confused and ask blackbok here at RPF to make me some vinyls. And they look great on the kit. Thanks Richard. :thumbsup

Group pic with some of my other equipments.

I actually put my camera in the medkit compartment during Vegas con. But you can see here the compartment can really hold stuff.

When I went to Vegas con this summer I showed it to Mike Okuda. By the way, meeting Mike and Denise may be the most exciting thing on that trip as I'm a big fan of their work. And he even agreed to sign on the medkit. (And he thought that ruins my kit?. hey it's my honor. :lol )

(Oh and thanks for your shaky hand camera dude.)

Here's the signed medkit along with a hypospray signed by Robert Picardo also during the convention.

Awesome. :D :thumbsup

And the Okudas are really great people, aren't they? I talked with them at length during the Christies' auction viewing days... and despite being (no doubt) exhausted from setting up the show, they were super nice and VERY considerate.

I hope we have not seen the last of the Okudas in Trek production. :unsure

Not only a wonderful replica, but also a functional prop. (And now it's also signed by "the Okuda" itself :D )
Awesome. ;)

That's fantastic. That's my number 3 trek prop, right next to the MKVII Sci and Med Tricorders.

Great work there. That's one of the pieces I've always wanted, but just never got around to either buying or making. You did an excellent job.

Any more pics?

I saw the thread and was all set to point you to some reference* but you obviously had that covered. Well done.

*the 2-hour special aired in syndication prior to the second season, "Star Trek: From One Generation to the Next", had a brief segment with Mike Okuda showing off some new props, including the medkit. This was the special that aired the color version of The Cage.

Was that the one where he pulls a MKVII science Tric out of the kit and shows it off for a few seconds?

As a kid, I used to rewind and watch that about 90 times a day. I was entranced by all the blinking LEDs. The Tricorders are what got me into this hobby.

OM. I'm green with envy of you... Ahhh - you met my guru of LCARS - I've sent him via Rod Roddenberry (I got to know him on a Con) my work, but so far Rod's been to busy to give some answers. Wow congrats...

Beautiful work. The autographs are icing on the cake. :) About five years ago I had Robert Picardo sign a hypospray for me. He never blinked. Wonder how many he's signed over the years? ;)

Jay

Thanks for all the kind words.

to k,
And yes, Mike and Denise are real nice people. Mike was talking to somebody, I waited for about ten minutes and started to talk to Denise, then she knows my intention and she DRAG Mike over..lol

to Matt,
I'll try to get some more pic this weekend. I'll also post some pics of the kit from the prop they exhibit in the museum.

to Treadwell,
I actually didn't see that special. Was it in any TNG DVD set? I've only saw the kit in one of special feature in ST6 DVD, it's about the prop warehouse in Paramount, and the medkit was only in the far corner of the table.

More pics as requested..

The inside of the compartment before the door is installed. Pretty big space, can hold hypo, padd (TNG), cordical stimulator. Sadly I don't think you can squeeze a dermal regenerator in, but since I don't have it yet I don't have that problem. :lol

Left and right, no I didn't use photoshop to combine two pics... :rolleyes

So this is what 3 medkits look like. The way I see it, if you took time to build one, you might as well build more. :p

If you hadn't noticed, I've changed the LED on the outside from red to green, this is why.

I took this pic during Vegas con this year, and I'm still wondering why I didn't think of put my medkit side by side and get a comparison shot.. :lol But I'm pretty satified with my kit after seeing the original medkit (that Mike over at HMS built). Hey, the orginal medkit has no cushion for tricorder slot?

What keeps the tricorder in it's slot? (That IS a tricorder slot on the left side top, under the strap?)

Jay [/b]

looks amazing..

I have foam cushion to hold the tricorder, I've tested with Rodd.com Mk X and playmates toy tricorder. It will hold them firmly in place.

What puzzles me is the orginal medkit in trek museum does not seem to have a cushion. Maybe it was removed before sending to Vegas for exhibition.

In that footage in the special (no, it isn't on DVD), Ocuda removes a tric from the slot and replaces it. You could hear it slide and clunk in. No padding.
