Spray Paints Question: Anyone used Krylon or Rust-Oleum "Hammered Metal Finish" ones?

As some of you may be aware, I recently purchased a Custom Sinestro Corps Power Battery Prop based on concept art by Ethan Van Sciver. And as I mention in that thread, I'm giving serious thought to repainting it in a metallic gold color.

So, I've been hitting stores and looking at paints. A standard metallic gold paint would be merely okay. It would look decent, but very ordinary.

I've already ruled out Rub & Buff, because I am NOT willing to literally work my fingers to the BONE to make it look good, so please don't suggest that route.

I've already ruled out the "gold chrome" paints from Krylon and Rust-Oleum, because I've seen them mentioned here before as being not very good.

But while in Wal*Mart over the last couple days, I noticed a new option I hadn't seen before: Metallic gold paints from both Rust-Oleum and Krylon that promise to deliver a look like "hammered metal". This interests me, as it would add a layer of detail to the prop that would make it more visually interesting and more unique. :cool:thumbsup

...IF it can be made to come out looking like the provided sample (the can's cap.) But I haven't seen anybody mention these here before. Has anyone on the RPF tried these new(ish) paints? If so, what was your experience with them? Are they good, or worthless? :confused

Any feedback would be appreciated. :)

I've used the hammered paint several times and had nothing but good luck with it.

You can do some interesting stuff with it, but I don't think its necessarily what you're looking for if you want to emulate a gold finish. I've actually used it in the past to make texture underneath a color, as sometimes I don't like the colors the paint comes in but still want the "hammered" look.

The inner dark gray section of this shield is Rustoleum hammered:

As is the entire body of my Big Daddy suit, this time in hammered gold (painted a bit too thick near the wingnut, hence the slight "running" in the texture):

Krylon hammered seems to not create as much of a texture as its rustoleum counterpart. The blade of this sword was painted with Krylon hammered:

I used the Rustoleum hammered in black for a custom model stand and at first I didn't like the look. On a larger project (painting a brass endtable) it looked great. The effect seams to work better on larger, flatter surfaces.

Well, I just want to paint this piece...

metallic gold, and that paint got me thinking about the movie version of the Green Lantern power ring, which has a weathered/antiqued, "hammered metal" band...

I'm considering all the options to make this prop look more realistic and to make it even more unique. I thought the "hammered metal" look would be one way to do that.

Another way I could make this prop look good would be to play around with gold chrome finishes that can be applied with a spray can. Just saw a thread talking about one so good, that Disney uses it on some of the vehicles in their theme parks to achieve a gold chrome look. But it's a more expensive, multi-layer process. And the paints used are hard to find at retail.

The color on that Big Daddy looks more like copper than gold, to me. :unsure

Beautiful sword, but yeah, in that picture, I can't see the hammered effect at all.

And even on the caps of the 2 cans, side-by-side, the Rust-Oleum looked better. So it sounds like that's the one to use.

So, if you look at the prop in question in the picture above (with a soda bottle next to it for size comparison) how do you think that would come out? The surface is pretty smooth, but it is curved. Thoughts? :confused

I've used it for quite a few things like the square face and feet of my gonk droid, my sister's ewok gun, my tusken gun, etc and I've been nothing but pleased with the results. I would recommend it if that's the look you're wanting. test it out first though - there's a happy medium between too much which runs, and too little which doesn't end up hammered at all.

Has anyone had luck with this paint on soft surfaces? I'm trying to make Centurion armor, and had the bright idea that Hammered metal spray paint on soft vinyl would be awesome and light, but it isn't curing. It looks great, but it stays tacky, even after a whole day+ of drying and some attention from the blow dryer.

I wanted to ask some experts before I started tinkering on my own, but my further ideas include using a product that makes nail polish dry faster, or just hanging the vinyl up in front of a fan for a while. Thoughts?

Depending on the surface, especially one that was not properly primed, paint will not really stick to it and never fully cure.

I picked up some primer last night to do another test swatch today. Thanks for the tip!

I used it a couple years ago to paint some dr horrible goggles that had a vinyl base. It never cured, even months later. I would worry about regular primer cracking and falling off vinyl. You might have to get some automotive primer with some flexing agent in it, and even that may not cure or stay in place.
