Spray Paint/ Fume Hood - Advice needed

I was wondering if any of you guys have built a fume hood for spray painting or bondo-ing indoors. My plan at this point is to build a basic box out of wood, line the walls of the box with cardboard, attach a fan to the back of the box and attach vent duct hose and lead that out the nearest window. Does this sound like it would work? Any potential problems? Any help would be appreciated.

My only 2 cents would be that if the fan is not powerful, like if you use a Home Depot type bathroom exhaust fan, then I would reconsider. They are not powerful enough.
Something else to consider is whether the exposed fan motor could start a fire by igniting the paint fumes. That might bear some looking into….

This might help. If you build one, let us see it! Good luck.

I did something very similar when I was younger and used to airbrush models a lot. I wish I still had pics of it. I used it in the winter when it was too cold to paint outside.

Basically it was a simple window fan similar to this that I taped cardboard around to make a boxed seal, and ran 2 dryer hoses from that to the sides of another larger cardboard box that I would paint in. I ended up putting a small neon light in the top to light it up.

If I remember correctly, I got a few winters out of it before the paint dust finally built up in the motors and burned them out. It worked pretty well and my wife NEVER complained of fumes when I was using it.

My neighbour had a DIY spray box which had an extractor fan on the back, he had it loosely stuffed with shredded paper, which he would change

i did all my painting and bondo in my garage. both doors open with a fan. thought about a exhaust hood, but this works just a well and didnt cost anything.
i do hope that by indoors you dont mean doing this in your house or apartment. you dont want that stuff floating around, specially if you have kids or animals
