Spider-Man suit web pattern

I’m planning on making a Spider-Man suit based on a mixture of the Edge of time suit,& the 3D model by Julen Urruitia. But I don’t know if I should use puffy paint or sharpie. Paint cracks and sharpie bleeds a little when wet. So you end up with a gritty look on the red portions. (The picture below is a test of sharpie after I wet the boot)

I would always suggest puff paint. Adding dimension brings so much to a costume.

Puff paint does tend to crack. I did a swatch test on a smaller piece of 4 way stretch material and I was not a fan of how as it cracked, it fell off. If youre between the two, I personally would play it safe and stick to a sharpie.

What puff paint did you use? And how long did you let it dry? I use Tulip brand Metallic, and it doesn't crack or come off so long as I apply it with the fabric flat and let it properly dry.

I’ve seen if you press the applicator to the fabric it stains the thread, which stops the cracking. I’ve found that if you heat set the sharpie it won’t smudge when wet. (The picture below demonstrates heat set sharpie after wet)

You can also add liquid latex to the puff paint which will allow the paint to stretch and not crack as bad.

I used sharpie on my last(and first) Spider-Man costume, and thought it worked just fine. If you want to go that route though, I'd recommend using fabric markers. It'll look cleaner and you don't have to worry about it smudging. As for puff paint, you can mix it with some latex or just straight up use latex and colour it black. Either or works, it just depends on your preference.
