Spider-Man as we know him, toast?

Ohhh - good save.

Why, whatever do you mean? ;)

In all seriousness, though, that was the first thing I thought when I saw it -- "Symbiote again?" Plus, I never really read the "Scarlet Spider" crap.

Eh, even that Ross suit isn't that great.

I've always liked the way Ross did the eyes on that concept suit myself though his chest spider-symbol was absolutely horrid IMHO.

The thought of an Ultimate Secret Wars would be kind of cool IMHO. I was around for the first one and it'd be cool to revisit that storyline for the sake of nostalgia and to see what kind of "ultimate" twist they could put on it. I really liked "The Ultimates" as an updated version of the Avengers.

prob. gonna be burned for this but... I kinda like how it looks, but then again I love the ben reilly suit.

As a big fan of the old red N' blues, i don't think the new design is terrible, but i do agree it is uninspired. I would however like to see the different design sketches of the artists up to this point, i think it would be cool to check out the steps that brought them to this design. The fans might think a previous not-used design is actually better.

They did end up using the Ross suit in the comics. Sort of. It was in a What if comic. I can't remember the exact storyline, but somehow Peter Parker ends up being trained as a super agent who works with Wolverine, and i THINK black widow. The three of them (i know there's a russian woman...not 100% it's BW tho) go around doing black ops and assassinations.

And Spidey's got this new meaner attitude...and a new addition to the webshooters.....a GUN!

When they do "top superhero costumes" in Wizard or whatever publication, Spider-man's costume almost always wins at number 1 - and I personally agree with that. Ditko's design is both heroic and kinda mysterious at the same time . I've always said - "Kids love characters that they themselves can draw and have other people recognize" - Spidey's suit is hard as heck to get right when penciling it - if you mess up on the web placement on the mask it looks all wrong (and I personally have never gotten it right) - but that doesn't keep kids from trying. Shows how cool the design is.

I too would have loved to read an Ultimates Secret Wars - I loved loved loved the original when it came out and that ending when Claw tricked Doom out of the Beyonder's power by bringing back the Superheroes was simply priceless. Or how about when Doom dropped a whole damn mountain on everyone and the next issue began with a panel showing Hulk and Thor inside the mountain holding it up just enough to keep everyone from getting squished. This was also at a time when Wolverine was written for what he was - a short dude with claws. I remember Spidey knocking the crap out of him then saying "Those pot stickers may be something in a bar room brawl, but I'm Spider-man!" - HELL YEAH!

Scuse me now, I have to go read a 12 issue mini series again.

I wonder if this suit has something to do with the new movie costume not being traditional?? It's either that or Marvel's book sales must be slipping - they kill off Johnny Storm and now this...!?

I think you nailed it right there on ALL points. The new costume's different, so put out a different comic costume, to get people used to something different, and maybe that'll lessen the backlash they KNOW they'll get from the internet (cause come on.....it's coming. There was some backlash on Sam Raimi's design. People hated it cause the webs stuck out and wern't silk screened on....i even read one guy hated it JUST because the spider on the back wasn't this big round tick lookin thing like in the comics) But also, yea. Comic sales arn't nearly what they used to be. DC came in strong with Blackest Night, and Brightest Day....probably what's led to this new Fear Itself story line, but even then, it's nothing compared to what it used to be. So toss in a new costume, and hope it'll boost sales for a few months. As for the whole Johnny Storm getting killed off.....he'll be back...they always come back. And at least this costume's just in the ultimates universe, Johnny got killed in the main universe.

lol..yes. He's probably the ONE comic death that stayed that way....Well..unless you count weird alternate universe story lines...
