Spaceballs Black Guard WIP

For Halloween/PAX/Whatever I've been working on a Spaceballs Black Guard Solider costume. It's turning out to be a bit difficult as there are very few good quality images of the armor out there. I have the DVD and have pulled a few images from that.

However I have the old dvd, the new dvd apparently has a costume gallery in it, also there is a blu-ray out there with even higher quality images from the movie.

Anyone have some high rez images of the Spaceball Black Guard armor?

So far I have the helmet mostly done (1 more coat of paint, need to find a visor, a little more padding) and it's looking pretty good. I've also got low quality versions of the Rifle and Armor done. Neither are really great though and I'm going to be replacing both of them.

As you can tell these are works in progress and I'm hoping to have the armor and gun completely redone. They are the first gun and armor piece I've ever made and I need to do them better. But this is where I'm at so far.

I was just thinking about this suit the other day! I'm a GIGANTIC Spaceballs fan, and I'm eagerly awaiting to see your results!

Nice job on the gun ! I have a airsoft gun ( don't know if it still works ) that looks like the blasters they used in the movie . I've always wanted to throw a scope on it and paint it the colors in the movie . Here's a pic ..

Those airsofts are really hard to come by these days, they can go for as much as the real gun. :unsure

I built my gun with cardboard, pvc, bondo, based on pictures and a set of technical diagrams that I found in a copy of the manual online.

Considering it was the first real prop gun i've ever made I feel somewhat happy about it.

I'm redoing it right now. Since I don't have an airsoft copy or resin copy of the actual gun, I'm probably just going to 'take artistic liberties' and make my own version of the gun. keep the basic shapes but make it a little bit more 'blaster' like.

Since the chest armor is me taking alot of liberties with the design, I'm not super worried about it.

If I do make a push at making an 'authentic' costume, I would try to find a copy of the M-100 and drop in in some silicone. But I don't know that this costume is really work spending the hundred dollars it would cost to do that.

Also, any of you have any idea where to find a good silver undersuit. I have a feeling that that is going to be the hardest part.

Not as bad as you'd think, just search ebay for Silver Zentai. Be warned though that this is entering fetish territory so you may see things that will scar you for life. :love

It's going, I'm redoing the chest piece at the moment. I would love to vacuform it over a clay mold or model it in pepakura, but since I don't vacuform or have any skill at modeling I'm rebuilding it out of paper-mache and cardboard.

It's moving along so far. I'll try to post some more pictures when I actually have something to post that I like. I'm never satisfied with anything I make.

I still need to find something good for the helmet visor, buy the silver suit (I need to learn the sizing on these things so I can get one, also I don't want it too be too....revealing. I'm looking to then buy some vinyl for the black parts.

I'm not trying to sink too much money into this thing until I get the chest piece 'good enough' that I'm happy with it. I'm not happy at all with the first version, although my second is coming along nicely.

I found someone online who has the original suit and helmet.

I emailed him and got no response. I was hoping he had dimensions on how big the helmet actually is. (I'm guessing between 10in-11in diameter) The 12in diameter helmet seems a little too big. I really would love to know exactly what type of material the suit is made out of.

it really does look badass, what was the end result?

The end result was that I couldn't get the chest piece right. It will probably take me sculpting a mold, and then a large enough vacuforming table to take that mold. I did two versions of the chest armor and neither looked right.

Someday I do want to return to this project, but right now Its kind of dead.
