Space Giants Whistle. (PIC HEAVY)

Gone but not forgotten.

This is the first prop I ever really really wanted. So badly that I took play-doh in hand and made one best to memory (no pics or vhs tapes for me to review.) Since then I've purchased a number kits and toys in Japan, but never have I found a true 1/1 scale repro of the prop.

Well, we've been doing a little research lately into this mighty little prop that with three chimes could summon the mightiest monster fighter ever Maguma Taishi - or Goldar as he was known here in the states - and we've discovered some interesting stuff. Nothing major, but I'm wondering if maybe just maybe there may be someone here who has any pics or info (especially some of our brothers and sisters in Japan) that may lead to a nice reproduction prop in the near future - if so - those who are interested in having one of these someday - what would you want in the prop. I'd also like some guesses on how big this thing might be (the actual prop) - it's hard to tell, I think the toys I own are off a bit
First is a pic of the toys -
The one of the left is a kit that also makes the little bird call whistle when the hinge is pressed - this is much bigger than the actual prop - the one on the right was a Wonderfestival exclusive resin kit - that I believe is too small.

Here's Miko calling in Maguma Taishi

And here is Miko today with the above pictured sound kit whistle

Now for a study of the prop - the first whistle used in the show was pretty banged up from the get go. The nose was smushed for some reason and there were scratches on the thing -

From the last photo I can see silver coming out from beneath the blue paint on the fins - Metal? Man I hope so.
Here are a slew of screengrabs studying the differences the rocket whistle went through as the show continued.

This is a curious pic - I've noticed the little bumps on this whistle before (seen under the red) but sometimes they are there and sometimes they are not. On a replica - would it worth it to even include them?

Would there be any interest in getting repros of these machined in metal? I know there is from me, but I'm pretty sure if we could get others then maybe one of our fine craftsmen here might be willing to do them for us. I know there has to be some Maguma Taishi fans here.

If you make it, they will buy. Well at least I will. :)

Jet, you know I'm in. I was one of the ones who kept trying to get the old thread going about making these. I've always wanted one of these.

Yes. I knew we could count on you old friend.

Now - what are your opinions on the size and model? My feeling it to go with a smooth rounded tip - an idealized version of what we think we see when we imagine the prop in our heads.

never a fan of the show but i love rocket ships
which is what it reminds me of
if you have a size i would love to help
i have a lathe
and an nc mill for the fins

As discussed, you know I like the cleaner version with the solid nose.

I'll have a machined proto together in the next 24 hours. Already found the chain, too! :)

EDIT: Make that 3 or 4 more days. Had to order more material. Didn't have the correct metal in stock. :rolleyes

At a glance; using the size of a childs palm for scale, I'm gonna say the whistle is just over 3"

I'll have a better idea once we start cutting.

Bro, you and I must be about the only two people really digging on this prop. :lol

Well, just noticed, we have 2 or so people with us. There's that!

The little fins come to an interesting taper. 'That's gonna make for a little machine work, right there!'

Once the metal proto is done I may just mold it and cast up a batch in resin to keep costs down.

By the way...does he blow into the fin?

I'm looking for a spot to place the hole for the sake of accuracy.

I was going to put a hole in the bottom of the rocket and the fin. Makes sense being a 'whistle' and all.

Thoughts?

There is no hole. He's just acting like there is. I've watched this show over and over again trying to spot an opening and not once have I spotted one. He does blow into the fin -

And yeah, you and I are behind a lonely table in a convention ballroom filled with people passing by and looking at us - never stopping. The banner over our table
reads "Space Giants Fanclub"

:lol:lol:lol

Watch and see, a couple dozen people will want them after I make a run of TWO.

Does it look like the neck chain hooks to the fins to you? That's what I'm seeing.

That's too funny. And just to throw my two cents in, I was a huge fan of this show as a kid. I can't wait to see what you do with this. Color me interested for sure. BTW, I was just checking out some Space Giants clips on YouTube. Yeah, I had to break out the cheese grater for all the cheddar-ry goodness, but it was nostalgia-inducing nonetheless.

Finally, Conan O'Brien used to do a "Separated at Birth" bit years ago. It made me think of this...

Hope you got a good chuckle. Looking forward to progress pics, Rylo. And Jet, thanks for being so passionate about this.

Why is Giant Robot in drag?

That GIANT ROBOT has saved this planet countless times - he deserves a little more respect than that Rob!

And to answer your question Rylo - Yes, the chain hooks close to where the fin meets the body of the rocket -
You can see the chain stops where the fin breaks at the curve
vlcsnap-11378269.png

and, it's hard to see, but the chain is falling next to the fin in this photo here and you can see the loop sticking out a bit

Believe me, im not one to judge anyone. Just wondering why he is in drag, thats all. If Giant Robot tells me it was just a phase, than so be it. Could have also been in an 80's hair metal band, ill buy that too.

I can't wait to see this complete. Not only will I be sitting with the fan club, I'll find myself a costume :)

Rylo -

As you know from my other thread I just won the pocket-shot on ebay. The measurements of it were listed in the auction and since we have a shot of Miko holding it and we now know the exact size - could this be used to get a true size for the whistle?

Here are the pics of Miko with the opened gun
vlcsnap-12745204.png

vlcsnap-12745322.png

vlcsnap-12745413.png

and here are the measurements listed on the auction:

"Folded up it measures about 4 1/2 inches long. Opened up, it is about 6 1/4 inches long and 3 1/2 inches tall, not counting the rubber knife blade (which is 3 inches long) on either."

This requires some thought

Not really much help with the scale. It's still a best guess in the end.

Cool win though!
