This may not be the best place for it, I'm hoping someone will have some connections or somewhere to direct me. I'm interested in creating replicas of ancient Roman military gear, not just the standard swords and helmets I can find on eBay. I'm looking for info on making an army standard in particular.

This video by Lindybeige is really worth a look.
It actually as hard to do as making a replicate prop it might even be harder. There will be a forum about doing this as there are four or five big groups in the UK at least. The people in the background of Gladiator are re-enactors.
