Billie Hayes Dies: Wicked Witchiepoo Of ‘H.R. Pufnstuf’ Was 96

Billie Hayes, who played Witchiepoo on the 1969-70 Saturday morning live-action children's classic 'H.R. Pufnstuf,' has died at 96 in Los Angeles.

Very sad news! She played two of my favorite characters when I was a kid.

IIRC she (as Whitchiepoo) introduced KISS at Great America or Six Flags.

She was fantastic. She put 1000% into every performance, even when just reacting and listening. So much energy and devotion to the role. Just watch her put "real" actors to shame in the Pufnstuf movie. The "star" witches were just bland compared to her. Yes, it's hightened "children's theater" kind of comedic acting, but it takes just as much skill to do well. Maybe more. Even coming back years later do to the (mostly terrible) Paul Lynde Halloween Special as Witchiepoo, she gave it her all.

That's a shame but, to be honest, I thought she had died years ago. Good for her, making it to the age of 96!

They used to run HR PufnStuf late-night/early mornings here on TV (one of the affiliate channels or the local channels, I can't remember) during my time in college and when I was up late, whether I couldn't sleep or was "on something," this show would freak me the hell out. It was a very fun time.

She was also on some General Hospital episodes in the 80's. I was really happy to see her on TV again.

Witchiepoo was the first witch I knew of. I saw her before I ever saw Wizard of Oz.

She scared the bejeezus out of me.
