Solomon Kane costume (New weapon pictures, pg2)

So, I found this place while cruising for costume parts, and figured it's a good place to get input.

I'm planning on doing Solomon Kane for this year's NYC Comic Con, and while I'm more than prepared to spend, I'm having a hard time actually FINDING parts for the costume. First pic is the basic guide I'm going by.

The parts that have eluded me are the black leather Jerkin (it might be a doublet, I don't know), and the hat for the most part. As soon as I get a solid quote, I'm thinking of having a custom shop make one of the two in the second pic.

Would you guys happen to have any good sources for leather gear? There's almost no information on the movie costumes at all, so finding close replicas is looking to be a bit of a pain.

Re: Solomon Kane costume.

Was this movie even out? I don't seem to remember seeing it playing anywhere....

Re: Solomon Kane costume.

Second that, the character reminded me of Van Helsing, the Hugh Jackman one (It's like Van Helsing+additional badassness)

Following with great fascination.

Re: Solomon Kane costume.

And of course, the people I contacted about the hat stopped answering me.

So I'm looking into handmaking it, since I have a decent sized hide of thick leather hanging around, as well as some thinner stuff.

I really like the pattern this guy used:
I-TAVARON-I on deviantART

I just have to figure out how to actually make it. I am not too fluent in leatherwork, so I'll probably mess up quite a bit.

Re: Solomon Kane costume.

I love the character and look of the movie, too bad it never got a proper release here i the States.
If you have a Tandy Leather store in your area, they'll probably be able to point you to a local craftsman.

Re: Solomon Kane costume.

After a LOT of searching, I found the jerkin I'm going to use.

It's the closest thing I could find to the movie one anywhere, and I think it looks rather nice. First pic is the piece, though it'll be black. Custom order, it looks like it's gonna cost about $200 plus shipping/tax. So that's 2 handmade leather pieces, both about that much money.

Note to anyone reading: Don't be a perfectionist. It WILL kill your wallet.

Luckily, the shirts under it, the gloves, and the belts are easy.

My next hurdle is a decent pair of boots and the swords/pistols.

Re: Solomon Kane costume.

I know it's been a while without an update, and that's mostly because, well there's nothing to show.

Costume as it stands now:
Had 2 companies saying they could try to do the custom jerkin, but both have lapsed in communication for a while now.
Ready to buy the leather pants, boots, gloves, baldric as soon as one company confirms what they have in stock.
Having someone from a sword-enthusiast forum make 3 custom swords out of wood. While I DID manage to find many of the swords used in the movie, a.) a lot of them are out of my budget range, and b.) I don't imagine it will be easy getting a metal sword into a convention hall.

However, I did just get this picture this morning. It's a progress update on my hat that I'm having made, and I think it looks fantastic. I can't wait to put it on.

Re: Solomon Kane costume.

International shipping is a killer, but my hat should be here in a few days.

I'm updating this to ask your guys opinion here, as I'm really stuck on what to spend the money on.

After having 0 luck finding the right leather waistcoat/jerkin/thing, I stumbled onto the item on the left. It's suede, and it's only made in England, so I'm paying overseas shipping anyway. It's got a nice look, but it's not leather.

Then there's option B, on the right. It's leather, it's not shipped overseas, and I can probably get some custom fiddlies done to it if I ask. Unfortunately, I asked the company that makes it AND another leatherworker, and both said they'd get me a quote on a custom that looked like the left, and never got back to me.

So, basically, it's a vote. The look I'm going for is in the original post, but concessions are being made based on what clothes I can get my hands on.

Which do you think looks better?

Re: Solomon Kane costume (NOW WITH REAL PICTURES)

I realize I'm the only one excited about this, but that's fine. I feel like telling someone about progress when it happens, and this serves that purpose.

Alright, so, my first package arrived today. Joy! In it were my leather pants and my gloves that I ordered. So that means pictures!

First, pants. They fit like a glove, and they're comfortable as hell. The only drawback is, they're leather, and it's summer. It's REALLY hot right now, so they get uncomfortably hot very fast.

And the gloves. Nothing special, but they fit nicely with, wide cuff which I like, and they're comfortable.

Apologies for less-than-great webcam quality pics, but it's either that or my cellphone, so I went with the easier option.

I THINK my hat should be getting here any day now, and I ordered the boots too, though I have no word on if they shipped or not.

Still hunting down a good jerkin/vest and shirts.

And while I'm here, I guess I'll throw in the progress been made on the replica swords that I'll be using. They're wood, because it's cheaper than real metal replicas, and as I said before, I won't get arrested trying to bring them into a convention hall.

That's all for now. New progress shots when I get more pieces in.

Re: Solomon Kane costume (NOW WITH REAL PICTURES)

Everything is looking great! I missed the movie too, look forward to seeing it. That hat...awesome! It turned out great! So you don't overheat with those leather pants, I might suggest Under Armor Heat Gard- it helps tremendously with managing heat-I wear it under my Clonearmor, under my musclesuit, etc.

The jerkin almost looks like it's over a suede shirt, but it could be just the picture.

For the jerkin, if you're interested, a friend of mine does custom leatherwork- done it for ren faires for years- did my Aragorn and my son & mine's Gondorian Ranger- Screen Accurate-
Reasonable rates. lmk- just PM me if your interested. You've just got to have as many detailed pics for her to work from.

Keep up the good work!

Re: Solomon Kane costume (NOW WITH REAL PICTURES)

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll be sure to check out the Heat Guard stuff.

As the movie costume goes, I've got a picture of the shirts, and it LOOKS like a normal cotton lace-up, and some sort of suede or wool 'shell', which I guess counts as a shirt, but it's really just the sleeves, front pieces, and back all held together with lacing. Looks like maybe leather piping, and cuffs. Picture in the attachments for a closer view, along with my mock-up drawing.

As for the jerkin, I'll shoot you a PM about it, and I certainly appreciate the offer. Like I said, every leather shop I talked to basically stopped answering, so I doubted I'd actually get it done.

Re: Solomon Kane costume (NOW WITH REAL PICTURES)

I can't wait to see this one finished! The costume looks like it's coming along great. I like how you're doing the swords out of wood---what kind are you using? I made some replica LOTR swords several years for a friend's Halloween party that never happened. I mostly used bass, for ease of carving, but they're not very tough---make for a great display, though.

I'm a big fan of Howard's Solomon Kane stories. I really wish they'd release the movie here in the US, but I'll just have to make do with rereading Howard's stuff for now . . .

I will be keeping an eye on this thread . . . :thumbsup

Re: Solomon Kane costume (NOW WITH REAL PICTURES)

I'm not actually making the swords, they're being handled by someone I met on a forum dedicated to swords. I originally went for help identifying the types used in the costume, and he offered to make wooden replicas for cheaper than I could purchase 1 metal one. Couldn't turn that offer down, so I took him up on it. He is using red oak, so they should be nice and durable, save the fiddly thin bits.

As for the movie, I heard talk of it coming to america, but if you know where to look, it's easily available on the internet, if just streaming. I got a BluRay rip from a friend I'm on a DC hub with, which is how I get my hi-res screens for costuming.

I've also started thinking forwards to next year. I might be doing Geralt of Rivia from the Witcher games/books. That should be fun.

Re: Solomon Kane costume (New Pictures! Hat acquired!)

I come bearing pictures of my newest acquisition, my long-awaited custom hat!

I can't put into words how much I love this piece. The guys at Leder Joe did a great job, and I can't say enough about how good they were answering my questions and putting together the special order. It got a little banged up in shipping (I'm looking at YOU, DHL), but it's nothing a bit of conditioning and bucket to shape the bowl can't fix.

Let me tell you, this hat is not light. All leather, brass buckle. But it looks sweeet.

So now, I'm back in purchase mode. Still hunting for shirts, a cloak, and the red sash/belts.
