Solo Bespin Jacket

None of those have a cool tone. You need to find one that reflects light blue, not green.

Very difficult to tell true color on computers, since they're all calibrated differently, but my main observation here is that especially the first and third ones appear too "heathered" - too much variation in color. Han's jacket looks very much one tone to me. The second one looks very green on my screen.

My 2 cents.

RRR

I agree. Han's was definitely a flat color, and the texture was different than those generic suitings. (never have been able to find the name for that weave.) You should look at gabardines. The twill weave is more pronounced and you might be able to find one with that sheen to it that Solo's had.

Curiously, this is the first thing that came up when I searched just now, I think it would be worth looking into, but the price sounds suspicious.

Went to the fabric guys today and came back with about a half dozen swatches for the (ever patient) seamstress. No question in my mind that the actual garment is grey, but we're shooting for a navy, as it appeared in the VHS era :lol

I've asked the company I linked above for swatches. I'll update here if/when they come in.

EDIT: I have no self control, I just bought the pattern, haha.

That's brilliant, we'll have two concurrent build threads going on!

Tempted just to buy three yards of that twill you linked to- for $10 seems worth it as I want to move ahead with this project. A lot of the fabrics I looked at just seemed too thin for a jacket...maybe the safety stuff will have more body to it.

Most twills are too thin for the jacket. Gabardine is usually heavier, although it does come in different weights. I'm not sure when I'll get around to actually making the jacket, so you might beat me to it. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. As for the Magna Fabrics material, let me know if they ge back to you. I haven't heard anything yet, but they might just not do weekends.

Will do. I found a great fabric place here in town and I may just email them a picture of the jacket as I want it to appear and let them do the legwork.

My Dawn Anderson pattern came in today, looks super easy.

So before I get started on this thing at all, do we know for sure that the DA pattern is completely accurate? At a glance it looks good, but when I watched ESB in HD a while back for the first time I noticed all kinds of seams on the shirt that I had never noticed before, and I know this pattern was made back before HD ESB was a thing, even on Spike TV.

I noticed there's a seam line that goes down the outer side of the sleeves, from the wrist and goes up to meet the upper back seam just behind the sleeve pocket. At first I thought it was fold creases but you can clearly see the seam while Han tells Luke "Take it easy" with his arms crossed. Does the DA pattern have that outer seam?
Here's where u can see it: http://www.rebeljackets.com/images/han_solo_jacket.jpg

That's just the back sleeve seam, but it's position relative to the pen pocket is definitely different. Looks like the pocket should be a little bit lower maybe. I've got one photo of the screen worn jacket being held up on a hanger, and there's some top stitch detail she definitely left out of her instructions. For instance, the sleeves are hemmed up with 3 parallel stitches about 1/4" apart, not blind stitched. I don't have any good pictures of the back though, and nothing super high res.

And is the liner the same grey as the jacket?

Oh, and that picture you've got there is mirrored, the pocket is on the left sleeve.

Ah yea, that's the picture I have. I also have a few of the Corellian Exports jacket, which looks almost nothing like it, even compared to the stiff cotton one on the DA pattern envelope.

Picked up our fabric today, went the navy route. Just waiting for the pattern to drop through the door - planning a video blog on this one too.

I was going to go with navy, too, but while looking through the fabrics on Denver Fabrics, I found one labeled "Pewter wool gabardine" that's a 50/50 wool/poly blend and it looks pretty blue. I went ahead and ordered it, I've got my fingers crossed it'll look the part.

Having difficulties with Dawn Anderson - fabric is ready, but my pattern still hasn't arrived, and the phone number they provided is disconnected, nor are they replying to email. Fun times.

After reading the other thread I'm starting to wonder if I got really lucky to get that pattern at all.
