So, Who looks at a sonic and thinks, "O'h this could be a bit more steampunk!"?

I do.

After the success of my first custom sonic, I decided to have a go with this one. You know how ideas come to mind, AFTER you've done something? Well, here is the product of what came to mind after I had begun my custom sonic. And...I got some ideas for my NEXT one! :lol

I decided to go for more of a Wild wild west, if Artemis Gordon was a time lord look.

I used a flat black base coat with a burgundy top coat, so the cracks come through. I then clear coated the whole thing. I mean, if you're going to use brass, you need a dark contrasting color, right? The rest was all scratch built by little ole' me!

And since she's steam punk, we need rubber gaskets to seal the steam in!

Notice the sight glass on the back end!

The brass access panel with a miniature door pull complete with nails in the pull holes!

Another angle showing off the lantern and crackle paint.

Notice the small holes at the top part of the lantern base, wight under the brass circle that holds the jewel.

Now notice how they light up WHITE, as the tip lights up BLUE! Oh yea, I'm awesome!

The business end lit up!

ARG! last winter I had an idea for a steam punk sonic, but as usually I drug my feet, and I'm still working on it, and now this is the second one, in the last 2 weeks, I've seen, and both are far better then mine. :( If I ever get mine done, now I'm really just going to look like a copy cat, and not an original thinker."( Well, since one of mine is for my girlfriend, and she wont hang out here, at least she will think mine rocks. :lol

REALLY, REALLY! great job. I love it. I wish I had thought of it. (well, I did, but just not quite as cool. :) ) Your leave of skill is amazing. The prop folks from the show, that hang out here, should totally drop you a line, and talk about using it(or one like it) on the show. :)

So did you make the main body, or was that part made from a CO sonic, or something like that? Also, what's in the clear part that exstends? (i.e. just a rod. twisted wire. etc.)

Ah, yes. The body is from the toy. (And now I don't have a tenth Doctor sonic!) The rest is scratch built. Inside the clear rod are two twisted wires that work up to the LED in the emitter. It only lights up in the fully extended position, however.

Thank you all for the kind words.

Another great custom sonic. This one makes me think, would it be easier to just paint the handle of a Tennant sonic black, then drybrush an ivory color over it than to actually crackle paint the handle? The crackle paint I've seen so far doesn't look anything like the handle, it looks more like caked on mud than anything else. Your method of painting the handle here looks pretty good, so I wonder how it would look if the original was repainted in the same way.

Yeppers!
Took the toy and painted the body FLAT black, very important to use flat. Then took a bottle of apple barrel "true burgundy" acrylic paint (Walmart .97 cents a bottle) and dry brushed the body. Take a paper towel and dab it in the paint, keep dabbing until it's almost dry and gently wipe it across the body. That way you do not get any paint in the cracks! You will need to do this about 7 or 8 times to get good coverage as you don't get much paint per application. Let that dry an hour, THEN clear coat it will a gloss clear paint. That will seal and protect the paint and make it shiny!

Thanks for the tip, I was going to use a brush and try to be very careful to not get in any of the cracks, but a paper towel will work much better.

Now I suddenly have a desire to see a spinoff movie from Wild Wild West about Artemis Gordon with a time machine he invented himself which he uses to travel through time (and, as a result, space.)

Hm, I think I might get to work on a similar script. I haven't filmed anything in years.

Well, if you'll be needing a prop for that film.....

We can work something out.
