So, what's QMX got up their sleeve?

off topic kinda, but I just got my BSG dog tags, pretty nice, not that much a difference than marajadesfather's over on the dewback wing tho

There the personalized ones, but instead of my name I just went with adama's from the show, I ordered them when they first started taking orders like a month or so ago

I would love to get some Starbuck Dogtags, but the $55.95 price is a little too high for me - for dogtags.
They do look nice.

Could QMx even do anything about Sid? After all, they own the Serenity license, and Sid's gun is from Firefly...

Sure they could. They could have said, "Hey, Sid: Help us out and we won't have any reason whatsoever to notify any of the copyright holders about any of your infringing works."

Interesting that the below post was PMed to me. Why not post it? True or Not True? Proof?

True or Not True? Proof?
My question exactly!
Why should I in any way believe the Sidkit is the basis for the Serenity Mal pistol?

I just disassembled my Sidkit Mal for the first time yesterday.
I found the use of set screws drilled and tapped into both of the two pieces being held together to be a very poor way to assemble something.
Normal practice would be a thru hole in one piece and a tapped hole in the other to clamp the one part to the other.
When both pieces are tapped, the screw threads establish a spacing and can't generate any clamping force.
I see epoxy being an important element to keeping the Sidkit from shaking apart in very short order.
If it is true that QMx is using the Sidkit for their Serenity Mal pistol, it had better be as a starting point, ONLY.

I don't plan to buy the metal Serenity Mal because frankly, I think they ruined the look of the Firefly Mal in trying to make it look more science-fictioney and less like a Civil War era Colt.
I'm happy to get the QMx stunt version.
I'll display it with my phillipes resin firefly Mal pistol.
Given that the Serenity Mal is less elegant than the Firefly Mal,
and that the brassy finish appears less like a real firearm than the Firefly Mal,
I fear that QMx is facing a hard sell if the metal Serenity Mal goes above $500.
The stunt version is right for my collection.

The same thing applies to the Jayne Firefly LeMat versus the greablied up 1911 Colt autoloader Jayne carried in Serenity.
Even Zoe's Mare's Leg had the iron sights removed and some dime-store-lookin' brass-laser-sight-thingie put in its place.
I don't think the Serenity weapons designers should have strayed from the original series look.
Hopefully, for the sake of the Serenity Mal pistol sales, mine is the minority opinion.

I think that has always been a valid point, and even moreso now. The appeal of the originally announced pistol was its purported quality, and that's moot now.

It's difficul to move a painted Phillipes cast on Ebay for more than around $70 now, so they may have a hard sell with this.

On the other hand, the Serenity verion hasn't been widleley available, so I guess completists will want to pick this up.

I would imagine QMX are extremeley glad they don't have to emulate the finish of the TV version.

For starters take a look at the parts photo on QMX's site of the unfinished "hero". Then look at the photo of the parts on Sids site. As for the rest, believe what you want or what some have heard straight from the horse's mouth.

If you mean the early look of the gun, while was still very dark, then that would way easier to emulate than the bright and shiny look that came with the natural wear of the bluing.

In regards to the Sidkit... he's still selling the Firefly version it seems.

And other PM

Why does this need to be so private?

If it's true then let it be told.

OK, just so I can understand this, someone is saying, with no proof or even a post from sid or steve, that QMX forced Sid, against his will, to create the new "stunt" blaster for them, under threat of being outted to the copyright holders?

Wouldn't it be easier, kind of like what they did with Ben, to just offer the man a job because they like his work?

If they are strong arming people, than I doubt I want to deal with QMX. Also someone said earlier in this thread that the QMX BSG tags remind them of of the work of MaraJadeFather from dewback wing. Perhaps they are his work and we just don't know yet.

Nobody is being strong armed. Anything happening is happening as a business arrangement.

Regarding proof, tough. Neither party posts here and clearly a person's word is not enough. A couple of people have said they got the info from the horses mouth. What more do you want? Signed copies of the freaking agreement?

How much difference can there be in brass hexagons with an etched stylized bird, name and serial number? Maybe MJF was strong-armed into helping them make the tags. Or MAYBE he actually got so damn close to the real thing that the QMX tags are based off of that they're just so goshdarn similar.

I mean, it's not like it's some custom firearm, it's a freaking brass plate.

Man, this is a great popcorn thread :)

Well I aways thought after all the problems they have had with the Gun and the Tags they should get the fans that have been making this stuff for sometime that they now have it down to an art. Now if they are strong arming people, than that is just wrong.

Difference is, MJF doesn't physically make the tags, he contracts it out same as he did with his pins. Sid physically made the Mal pistols didn't he? The member making the ship papers (sorry, I forget his name) physically made the papers didn't he? They didn't just find some company and say "make me this" like MJF did.

Again, it's a freaking hexagonal brass plate with some engraving. If QMX can't suss that out on their own with access to screen-used tags without having to get a gentleman who CONTRACTED the work out involved they really don't deserve our money do they?

MJF did a lot more than find some company. He did design work, research on fonts, also one of the people who helped him had access to a screen used set of tags. QMX has had access. promised us tags for $20 and than they the old bait and switch and can now make the tags for $55. We will never see the other tags. The $55 ones are the only ones we will ever see. QMX has left a bad taste in my mouth.
