I actually didn't say that they should be praised or attacked. That's entirely on you.

Following the recent incident where MR oversold their stock of vader helmets, I had decided to keep out of the off-topic chatter on QMx because it helped me to realize just how frustrated those who preordered have every right to be. I'm genuinely sorry that I posted anyway, because this is not an argument where either side will budge. This is the end of my off-topic posting in this thread, and hopefully on this subject.

On topic, I wouldn't've paid $250 for the original gun, but may pick one up for this price. Once they start shipping, and reviews get posted, it'll be clearer.

I really have no interest in Firefly/Serenity. Couldn't tell you the difference between the two guns if I had to, nor do I care. However, as a business goes, I really see nothing to praise QMx about. Sure, they are making this new version available, however that in no way negates their previous ineptitude. They have yet to deliver on the previous items they've tried to hock, and until they rectify that and satisy their early customer base they really have no business trying to push new product. Did they learn from their previous mistakes? Possibly. But you don't say you know why a bridge collapsed and then move on to build a new one, leaving the previous path open and unrepaired.
 
So am I the only one bothered that QMX is selling a modified Sidkit gun as their "Hero" version and charging around $700 for it when Sid only charged $250?

From QMX email/newsletters:

"QMx will be offering "Hero" version of Mal's Pistol, which will be coming sometime before the end of 2007. This replica will retail for somewhere around $750, and feature intricate detailing, working trigger and hammer, walnut handle grips, display stand and packaging that will appeal to our serious collectors. As we no longer accept pre-orders until we have a firm ship date, we will contact you once the Hero version is ready."

Call me crazy but it seems it would be easy (and cheaper) to just take a Sidkit gun and modify it to the Serenity version ourselves.

What am I missing here?

Well, this is just a thought (since they haven't announced precisely how it will be finished)...BUT I believe the QMx "hero" gun is going to be plated - a process which, when done on the Sidkit Firefly version, apparently costs upwards of $300. So, that'd bring the price up to $550. Not to mention it'll be professionally assembled and finished after the plating (eliminating a fair bit of work compared to the kit). Plus the wood grips, altered magazine, additional hammer piece, and perhaps some of the other minor greeblies that were changed between the Firefly gun and the Serenity gun.
 
I agree if it is plated that is one thing but on their site, it says the pictures are "pre-coloring". That sounds to me like perhaps they will not be plated but rather finished in some other way. I guess we'll see at some point in the future!

I really hope it's plated, for their sake. Us Sidkit buyers were able to get away with finishing the Firefly version of the gun without plating because it was mostly darkened. The Serenity version, though....if it's not brass-plated, it's not going to look right, it's so much more brassy. And painting, well, that'd just be a bad move in my book.

Hmm... that's a serious chunk of change. I woulda' thought they'd put a limit at about $500, or at least kept it closer to the cost of a MR Elite Edition replica. :confused

If the final version has a correct visible working hammer, plating (not paint) and wood grips, then it would not be easier or cheaper to modify a Sidkit. Having one gun plated isn't cheap (take a look in the Sidkit pistol thread...) and creating the visible hammer out of the Sidkit Firefly version would be a bit of a chore.

I'm more concerned that Siderios kit isn't 100% accurate, like Dr Slurpee said. So if they're modifying one of his, they're basing all the work around an inaccurate model, albeit only slightly. Hopefully they only used it to get a quick prototype made, because if they want to charge $750 I'd expect it to be 100% accurate to, and cast directly from, a screen used version, preferably the working hero gun.
 
Didn't they just use the Sid as a protoype? Is there any solid knowlege that the final hero would be based on a SID?

If it is, why? Don't they have access to the original hero & a staff of experienced designers and model-makers?

Why would they even consider using the SID for the hero ??

Doesn't make any sense to me :wacko
 
I contacted QMx customer service asking if the stunt pistol will include a stand or case and she said "a stand is available separately for an additional $20" but I don't see it on their website anywhere. I like having my replicas in cases so this might be a pain, wonder if the guy from sgcases.net will offer one.
 
I just looked at the review posted at Serenity.com. I like the packaging but those grips look like plastic if you ask me!

As for Sid's involvement, it is a fact that not only the prototype but also the production pieces are made by Sid. Lets just say Steve made Sid an offer he couldn't refuse in an old Chicago family sort of way to get his cooperation.
