As I recall, they scrapped the idea to have it plated because a lot of the fine details got filled in.
So, what's QMX got up their sleeve?

What fine details? The only real details on the gun are the fake parting lines, and a few grooves... If those were getting filled in with the plating then it was damn thick plating! Metal plating[SIZE=-1] is measured in microns (1 millionth of a meter) and is usually a single digit... Even with a base coat I highly doubt that the plating process would result in anything thicker then a good paint job... Probably no thicker then the rattle can paint job on the new dumbed down version...[/SIZE]
You want to talk about details how about the blast from a rattle can paint job?
I have heard so many stories and excuses for this gun all I can say is that I hardly believe half of them as being factual, and honestly believe just like the new delayed metal gun, these stories are nothing more then time buying...
Whoa there, I was just repeating what I remember reading. The plating wasn't the only reason given for the switch. It may well have been time-buying bs. Maybe they never even switched manufacturers.... there's no way to know. I don't know much about plating but whenever you see plastic that has been plated (or vacuum metalized), the details usually look a little soft. A thick coat of paint will be noticeable of some of the details on the Mal pistol, the thumb crews are especially sensitive. Still, Sideshow seems to have pretty good detailing on their Terminator items but I've never seen them up close.
Either way, when you take away the negativity surrounding the company and certain people there, the "dumbed down" gun is not a bad deal compared to other offerings, like Sideshow's weapon replicas, which are also painted plastic. Even MR has released a bad paint job or two (Motion Tracker, Fett rifle). I'm still more concerned about the feel of the grips than the finish. I guess we'll see come end of the month how good/bad the final product is.

Plastic plating normally has a clear coat over it. That is what fills in the details. The vacuum plating over that is very thin.

yeh it is- it helps keep everything frm looking patchy. I dont think is very controllable- ie you can end up with quite rubbish finishes because everything then depends on the quality of the clear coat paint job.........
You know- if you take away the dissapointment some of you have felt over the change of plans they have given- i think it looks pretty cool. Especially if you take 'stunt' as being the main word.............a painted and assembled gun for this price is pretty amazing really, no??

Let's wait and see if they manage to deliver these. I will admit that I am a bit dubious about plastic gun replicas after the Coyle PKD I bought all those years ago [and sold] ... and would really only be interested in a full metal hero.
But that's where I am at now after ten years of collecting. As a Serenity fan, I would liike to see one of these "stunt" versions.
If QMX can at least get something besides paper props delivered and into some collections, then maybe some nicer things will eventually appear down the road. In all honesty, I consider this a pretty small step, almost a baby step. But it's one they've got to take and make it successfully if the company is going to go anywhere near relevance to replica collectors.
That's not to disrespect the paper props QMX has done: what I've seen is great and all, but as a screen-used collector, paper props are almost anathema to me. Maybe when they get that ship's papers kit/package out I'll be more enthusiastic about them. Maybe....
I do notice that they seemed to have learned their lesson after all the bruhaha from that free folded map that they gave away. They've learned to roll their giveaways now, at least. I'm surprised they're still into the "extras" concept.
Not that I expect a certain band of "The usual suspects" to give QMX a break if they pull anything off, but it would be nice to see something move beyond the planning stages. It might be a sign that QMX is at last turning the corner.
And if all those interminable paper prop releases eventually result in me finally getting a The Creature from the Black Lagoon Devonian Creature Hand into my collection... I'll forgive all the paper props.
I guess we'll know in less than three weeks.

It's not the change in plans. The folks are *****ing about this so much because of the guy running the show. If it was some unknown there wouldn't be nearly as much complaining
Personal grudges happening here. The Mal gun is just the cheap window dressing.

The items from Sideshow are plated and they show detail. I think QMX is in a no win situation with members on this board. I am looking forward to what they can produce. One just has to look at MR to see their declining quality of recent releases. I have a Luke ANH FX on the way that I am not looking forward to after the reviews of the 2nd wave. At least QMX is owning up. PR and customer relations have a lot to be desired.

I never said that QMX was right and MR was wrong, just pointing out that MR has been running into issues of their own and they are an established company. I did state that QMX PR and costumer relations have a lot to be desired. With MR dropping the Star Wars license and going out in a puff of smoke I am very interested with QMX. And there are grudges here and some rightfully so.

2 completely different situations as you rightly point out MR are an established company and they are coming to the end of the SW licence kind of predictable that standards are going to fall they don't really have anything to lose.
Qmx are a company that need to establish themselves and so far aren't making a good job of it and they have plenty to lose if things carry on the same way.

I'm just sad that every single discussion of any official prop release from my favorite scifi universe immediately gets bogged down by negative posts. QMX are more than one person and at least a few of them seem to be really good guys (and at least one gal).
There certainly have been legitimate causes to complain in the time since QMX set up shop, but recently with the Ship's Papers and now (finally) the Mal pistol, it kinda feels like some people are here to complain just to cause a ruckus. QMX have made mistakes but they seem to be making an effort to better themselves. Can't we just do as Jeff (outlander) suggested- wait out the 20th of October and see how the gun turns out? I've a feeling the Stunt Mal will be a make-or-break prop for them. Now that it's finally on the way, everyone will be watching them extra closely and they know that for sure.

I got a reply from Qmx customer service... basically the only additional info gleamed from the reply is
1) the barrel is now machined & dyed plastic (dont remember that on the webpage)
2) Grips are cast separate. email said they are really nicely finished & most wont want to replace. I'll take that as I can put wood ones on.
3)Collateral: There is no numbering and thus no plaque, no display stand. It WILL BE AN OPEN-ENDED EDITION on the stunt pistol.

Care to elaborate? Are they/you saying that the stunt is NOT cast from the original blah blah blah but more of a idealized bashed together version with se modified derived parts (that have some lineage to the original) and other newly machined and created parts that have no lineage?
