So, what's QMX got up their sleeve?

WEBMASTER: "Umm... we still have nothing to put in the newsletter. I think we should be honest and tell the customers we're not ready."
STEVE: "Don't think! I don't pay you enough to think! Just throw something... ANYTHING together and e-mail it! Kapeesh?"

So, they're selling off the failed attempts at the first run of Mal pistols as "stunt" versions and now they're planning a metal version.

I wonder what the price will be on the metal version.

No only a metal version!

"This contrasted with the $1,000 QMx estimated a metal version of the pistol would sell for."

Yeah, they way this company is performing, I would really end up putting 1,000 bucks for a pre prder item! Keep on dreaming, QMX!

Wait! Is this the same Mal pistol you announced last year?

Almost. It is based on the same pattern but has eliminated some detailing, such as metal finishing screws and wood grips, to drive the cost down $100 without compromising either accuracy or overall quality. If you didn't know those things were ever part of the model you'd never know they were missing!

Classic :lol how the hell do you eliminate details without compromising accuracy and quality ?

So now that the guns are $100 cheaper, do I get a refund on $100 paid over seven months ago?

The metal photos posted look exactly like the Sid kit I have sitting here on my work bench. Is Sid making those?

I'm going to ask for a full refund at this point, the painted resin version is not what ordered and I don't think it looks all that great. :unsure

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends...

Some points:

These are not "leftovers" from the first version. Once the decision was made to make two separate models, the stunt version was redesigned and produced.

The metal screws and wood grip will now be resin. They will still be hand-painted and finished, and the pistol will still use the metal-impregnated paint to give it heft and a cold feel. And it's still cast from the same mold as the movie prop. Up to you whether you think this is different from the Sidkit, but I don't think he can match the accuracy or "feel." And many fans lack the patience or skill to finish their pistol kits with the quality as the average RPFer. You can check out more details in the stunt pistol gallery. Note that there are stacks of them in the warehouse. It ain't vaporware, they've learned their lesson and they ain't saying anything anymmore until they have stock in hand.

If you paid and want a refund, it's yours. If you paid and want this, the difference will be refunded to you. Details on what to do if you've given them money is here.

Basically, I think QMx ran into some production problems and rebounded nicely with more options. If this is a problem for you, don't buy one. If you want a great Mal pistol replica for a decent price, go check 'em out.

Since they can now convert preorders why not convert the BSG dog tags pre orders to the all medal ones. I say this is the only Mal Pistol we will ever see from this company.

Revisionist history Cabridges.

I would hate for someone to go through Steve's posts regarding the Mal pistol and show up what rubbish is actually printed on their website.

Some of us have been watching from the start and that's clearly the original design that was photographed (apparently Version 2) minus metal parts.

The Sidkit pistol is from Firefly, not Serenity and therefore doesn't match the QMX version, it's an entirely different beast.

Kudos to QMx for releasing something. Although they haven't actually released it have they? Can't order until next month.

When it's actually available I will attempt to buy one, but as the SVA law will be in force in the UK by then I have no idea if I'll get to see it.

OK in short...

1. The Mal pistol that people paid for and ordered will NEVER be delivered, it was and will forever be the vaporware version, all the promises that you will get a bigger and better version for your money and wait were false...

a. You can settle for a dumbed down version and get credit...
b. Or you can pony up more money and continue to wait for yet another revision of the gun that has no official release date...

I guess in the end there is no update or big word just more talk of delivery, waiting and how much better the final (if you sent more money) product will be...

Didn't say it wasn't. I was referring to MechaMechanic's post: "So, they're selling off the failed attempts at the first run of Mal pistols as "stunt" versions..." I took that to be suggesting that QMx had a few crates of half-assed pistols still lying around and they just changed the description. Of course this is the original design; leaving off the metal screws and wood grip was what brought the price down, but it's still the same weapon cast from the same mold. You're right, though, Sidkit's is the Firefly design.

Can't speak for Steve's posts, he's on his own there. But so far everything I've heard from my QMx contacts has been accurate and that's what I'm going with. We'll know soon enough what the stunt pistols are like.

Okay it's just weird that they breakdown is very similar to Sids, that's why I thought they were the same, my bad.

After clicking the larger pics I see the differences.

I like what Cambridge’s posted, I will be requesting a refund at the first of the week.

Seriously, you can't tell me that after nearly a year of half assed updates on the "original" Mal pistol, and admitted design and quality issues with whatever non vaporware prototype pistol they DID have, that the ones being offered now as "stunt" versions aren't some sort of leftover from that project.

And sorry, but it seems way dubious to me that they all of the sudden are doing a metal version after Sidkit proved that it could be done. The real question is how much will their metal version cost?

At that price, I will buy a "stunt" pistol, and it is good that they've finally done something with the project, but I still have to air on the side of caution when it comes to QMx and their Mal pistol.

Oh, I don't blame you a bit. I can be more casual about it cuz I didn't prepay :) I know some of the behind-the-scenes of what QMx has gone through over the last year and I appreciate how hard they've worked to overcome the setbacks and produce works they can be proud of, but their PR and other public postings about this have not been the best and I can see why folks would be -- excuse me -- gun shy.

I think dropping the payment plans and refusing to list order dates until they had stock in hand from now on is definitely a step in the right direction, and now they just need to produce quality work and build their reputation back up. I'm looking forward to it.
