Snowtrooper Boot's Faux Laces and Dr. Who 1964 "Snows of Terror"

This is kind of a unique "discovery" that also plays into another suedo-mystery concerning the enigma that is the faux laces seen on a few of the Snowtrooper costume's mukluks. A member in our detachment happened to be watching some older Dr. Who episodes and came across the episode the "Snows of Terror," part of the show arc "The Keys of Marinus" from 1964. The episode features "Ice Knights" or "Snow Guardians," who are unmistakably wearing Canadian Military Mukluks, the same exact boots used for the Snowtrooper costume.

What makes this unique is the fact that the boots these characters are wearing quite clearly have the identical matching "flap" added to the front of the mukluk boots. This very "flap" is clearly seen on some of the original Snowtrooper boots, however, with the addition of faux laces.

Due to this discovery, it provides not just clearer reference for this "flap" as well as indicating how this was done for the Snowtrooper boots.

This basic premise is not a new theory but has been around for awhile, with jackdoud presenting this idea many years ago on the Blizzard Force forums.

I put this basic layout together to better explain what we feel was done:

So far this is the earliest use of Canadian Mukluks in film as far as I am currently aware, but these boots could have certainly been used in other media prior. Due to the fact that standard issue mukluks do not have this feature, it was an added component. The reason for it being added for these costumes in the Dr. Who episode does not have any clear reason or function, but doesn't necessarily mean it had to. It does, however, suggest to me that these boots were used elsewhere before the Dr. Who episode. Given how cheap these productions were and how frequently props and costume pieces were recycled for other productions, it's no surprise really. It can be said with great confidence that it's very very likely these boots used in the Dr. Who episode indeed ended up being re-purposed for the Snowtrooper costumes.

So there you have it. If you know of any earlier uses of the Mukluks in media, please let me know!
