SNEAKERS movie props?

Here's some preliminary work identifying the styles of these components. I'm ordering the lot, then we'll see how they look together.

Someone mentioned this earlier, but after looking at HD screencaps, it's obvious they have square iridescent stickers on top of 4 or 5 of the ICs... :)

Yes! I can’t decide if it’s iridescent or just the aluminum foil tape which seems to be on every prop shop bench. They’ve shined up the edge of the board that the oscillator is on, too.

The other side of this thing must have been a real eye sore, because they’ve gone so far as to flip it around so this side is always camera facing, sometimes towards and sometimes away from the hinge of the answering machine depending on camera position

Just wanted to throw this out there. If anyone's looking to build one of these and can't print my version or isn't concerned with 100% accuracy, I found this drive adapter which gives the basic visual gist of the black box, despite not being exactly the same:

Bought one- It looks great in my case. Once assembled, I'll take some photos.

Thank you! :) I just pulled up my (ancient) post (www.blog.tavres.com/sneakers-black-box-project) and will have to re-do those screen shots :)

The BIGGEST part I need help with, is the big 'spacer' between the lid and the body. I have thought for years that it needs to be 3D printed, but I don't have the skills, or printer to do it :) And they certainly didn't have a 3D printer when the movie was made :)

From screencaps of the prop, almost certain that the prop makers used strips of thick styrene (like this 14" (35cm) WHITE POLYSTYRENE DIMENSIONAL STRIPS ) and sanded (or heat molded) the corners into shape.
This type of styrene plastic is a staple of kit-bashing and model-making and this would be a pretty simple build overall (4 strips cut to length, bonded together, corners rounded to match, then bonded to the lower shell.

That said, if you'd really like a 3D printed ring, shoot me a DM and we can work something out. :)

Still been looking for the tape recorder that Redford used in the movie. This is the closest I've come but it's still not the correct one... anybody know which one they used in the movie?

That is the right one…they just added a mock speaker on the face.

Just unboxed my latest eBay find. I have a service. Not sure what I need an answering machine for. I guess I'll just put it on my desk...between the pencil jar and the lamp.

Hoping to resurrect some interest in this thread. Would love some fresh eyes and renewed discussion/speculation about the internal components of Janek's box.

I wish someone would make a kit !!!

Reviving this thread a bit, but finally managed to add a speaker grill to the cassette player! Since it's so hard to find one in that size, I ended up designing the speaker rim and 3d printing it and added a grill that I have repainted.
Excellent job…I acquired two of those so as to not molest the pristine working one I had. These still spring up on eBay as well as the answering machines. Hopefully someone will come up with a kit for the inside of the box.

I would love the answering machine as well, I do believe they redesigned the bottom base to fit all of the electronics in, might need to sort out a list of components eventually

You can find them no problem. I got two for under a hundred bucks wanted to keep one as is and one to mod. Same with the micro recorder. Two is better than one I hope some one on here will put togeather a kit for the answering machine internals…it’s over my head finding/understandind those things.

Just FYI that I've updated my models for the case and black box (which is unchanged). I've also added short and tall cards with and without electronic parts, and also a TO type transistor for the ends of the black box. I modified the shell part because I decided I wanted to leave the black tape mechanism plate on with spindles, tape heads, etc. so it looks more 'stock' from the outside. I also fixed the front which was about 1.5mm too short once assembled. This is also why I needed to make a short card because the cavity in the top lid is now covered.
(also at Sneakers Code Breaker )

PS - My previous build got ruined so I'm building a new one. This one will look stock from the outside except for the shell extension. I cut away the middle of the circuit board so that all the ports and switches on the perimeter are still visible from the outside and the black box fits in the hole in the circuit board (pic here). As mentioned above, I also pulled all the gears and etc. off the tape mechanism, cut off any long pointy bits to make it as shallow as possible, and reinserted the take spindles and heads. So it looks stock with the lid open as well (they just completely gutted all that on the original).

Just wanted to reawaken this thread, and first say thanks to all who blazed the trail! I just picked up an answering machine after getting some inspiration from a viewer in this thread, and now I've just got to make one of these boards!

And tankgrrl, I'll be printing your box inserts! Thank you so much for the effort there!

Will update as I do more with it.
