SMOOTH-ON USERS!

Gone but not forgotten.
Hey guys, I need to get some resin in here in the worst way, and I can't get any of my usual stuff from SilPak in CA because of the cold. There's a Smooth-On distributor abou 4 hours North of me, but I don't know what to order.

I've been using SilPlastic so I need something ultra high quality, shrinkage in the thousandths, strong with a at least a little flexibility. Ideally, I'd want something about the consistency of an unbreakable type comb, with a 1:1 mix ratio.

Can anyone recommend something? I really need user opinions, not a company reps sales pitch. :D

Thanks.

Any Dick Blick stores in your area? They carry Pour-A-Kast II by Synair... It's a stock item by me, and I'm sure they will order it in if it's not...

The specs can be found on this site...

For Smooth-On give them a call and see what they suggest, I hear they have great customer support.. I can't really offer any insight as I prefer other brands... Unless you need clear Smoot-On has my business there...

One of my Hannibal buyers just recommended Smooth-Cast 305, can anyone else vouch for it?

The only word of advice I can offer on the 300 series resins is that they get stuck in a "rubber" like stage for quite some time... Demolding too soon and you will get warping due to this softer setting stage (what I call the "rubber" stage) at least this is my experience... I don't know how your SilPlastic resin was, but from my experiences I like resins that kick and then get stiff and hard real quick so I can actually demold quicker...

I use 305 but it takes 30-45 minutes to demold depending on the temperature.

It's a quality product though.

If you have a retail store that sells it go to them. The reason is they have small pieces of the finished product kinda like paint chips or carpet squares. You will be able to see which is the right kind for you.

Also you can call up Smooth-On and ask them. If you know you want the flexability of an unbreakable comb then you can tell them about it. They will be happy to help you out.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I also just got a tip on a place called BCCProducts that might have something I can use, and they're only about 10 miles away. :) :thumbsup

I'm going to check with them first thing Monday.

The slower demold with the 305 doesn't sound too bad, since most of my stuff is brushed up in 5 - 7 layers, that shouldn't be a problem. By the time the last layer is brushed in the first 2-3 layers should have acheived plenty of hardness to prevent any warping. :)

Thanks.
