Hello RPFers, i thought id share the progress of my Thermal Detonator build i started this project 3 days ago and its coming along pretty well. its roughly the size of a baseball (youll see why). i am aware that the MRTD is smaller. everything i used was found around the house minus the bondo but i had that left over from a previous project. it's getting to the point now that im doing final touches before i try and make mold of it. i plan on molding it in 3 pieces (bottom/core, top and switch) i hope that makes sense. here's some progress pics up until where i'm at today. :)

sorry for the crappy cell pics.

managed to get some better clearer pics of my progress so far. i painted it flat white to help me see what needs to be fixed. so far the switch needs to be retouched in the front and also i need to address the front of the lower shell. so far its coming along.

i plan on molding it in three separate pieces like in this picture. i was wanting to do it in three separate parts so that i could modify the cast pieces to add lights. i have some neat ideas for the holidays .

Very creative! :thumbsup

thanks! :)

oomoo...................

right!?

Love the idea for source materials!

thanks! after i was google searching the arming switch. i saw over on the dented helmet that someone use a plastic toy baseball. wish i would have seen it before i started because that would have saved me some bondo time and dealing with the red lacing:)

Yeah, you can put hooks on them and turn them into Christmas Tree Ornaments! I think it looks great. If you don't mind me asking, what's this from?

Exactly! that's one of the ideals i had. it's a grenade that princess leia uses in The Return of the Jedi. i dont want to spoil it but she uses it to negotiate a better price from Jaba for Chewbaca.

Re: Quakevirus's Thermal Detonator build *pic heavy

only the most iconic grenade ever! pretty effing sweet. you should make a vader christmas angel, spray paint an angel black and put a vader helmet on it, lol

Re: Quakevirus's Thermal Detonator build *pic heavy

small update, spread some more bondo cleaned up some areas. i have a couple weeks until i can order my molding and casting supplies so im taking that time to straighten up some lines and fine tune things. here's some more pics. it's getting there, but not there yet.. :)

Re: Quakevirus's Thermal Detonator build *pic heavy

cleaned up the switch some, it's looking alot cleaner. i recessed the edge that way the "grip" part of the switch is now raised. i still need to fill in those tiny bubble spots and smooth a little more. its looking way better than it was. :)

Re: Quakevirus's Thermal Detonator build *pic heavy

found some time to work on this a little bit. redid the top of the TD. still some fine tuning but other than that i'm happy with my results so far. not bad for a baseball and a little bit of bondo.

With shovel in hand I'm digging this one up from the grave for an update.:lol Ok with Xmas around the corner, I had the idea of dusting this old girl(yes the TD is female) off the shelf and make some ornaments to give to family for Christmas:).

I finally got a mold together for it..actually 3... Top, bottom/center, and the switch.

I'm making the one below out of my second pull. Kinda figuring it out as I go along. I still want to eventually make them functional but .. this'll do for now.

I needed a red light. I had got some of these tinted pvc sheets from the art supply store for a school project a couple years ago. I heated it up with a lighter and pulled it over a flattened marble I glued to the end of a small screwdriver. Keep in mind these are for tree ornaments so I just need one light on the inside to light her up. I'd like to eventually wire it up right where the switch turns it on and off and whatnot.:love

Here's the pvc sheet. Totally forgot to take pictures of the individual pieces. you can see a couple in the background of this one. I'll get some uploaded soon.

Here's the setup I came up with. I recommend a sturdier base...:lol

and tadah! fake red light bulb.:)

I cleared out the housing for the three timer lights up front and the red armed light, painted and test fitted it all together.. I'm going to try and weather it abit tomorrow or the nextday.

Don't laugh at my stand.
