Re: STAR LORD accurate helmet GOTG Vol 2. with screen lineage Run 3 open for depos

Could someone please post a couple of close up pics on how you installed Rockets lens kit? I am struggling with exactly what I should dremel out in the eye holes and how the lens kit is supposed to be installed. Any guidance would be appreciated!

"What i did was take a dremel and grind aways the lip that is rough from the casting. And you sand it enough to where the lip is barely visible and the lens will slide in and rest in place on that thin lip. Be careful to not remove too much material tho, do a little bit at a time, drop the lens in and see how it looks, take off some more material etc...i believe the movie eye kit is butted up behind the eye socket, recessed about an 1/8" of an inch. you will have to take out a bit out material on the inside"

Re: STAR LORD accurate helmet GOTG Vol 2. with screen lineage Run 3 open for depos

Thanks for the description. Did you use Rocket's lens kits? I don't want to highjack the thread, but I will add some details to Rockets original helmet painting instructions once I get this lens business sorted out.

OK, does the lens kit housing lip get seen from the front of the helmet? In other words, does the clear lens get seated in the housing against the lip? If so, then I need to dremel out to the outer most eye socket ring, correct? I will also need to reduce the housing ring lip since it is quite wide.

Again, any thoughts and recommendations are appreciated. I will take pictures of my progress and share.

trim the areas circled in red. i trimmed away too much of the red circle on my helmet and had to do a little resculpting with bondo.....the lens housing should be butted up against the helmet eye circle. if that makes any sense

you can see how little of a lip i left on the housing in order to keep the lens from falling through....dremel bit by bit and dont take too much off at once

here is where i have my lens housing sitting (blue arrow) i dremeled out the inside of the helmet to try to make the housing sit in there securely. I hot glued it in place and it worked great

Yup followed exactly what thadbo13 told me a week ago (same thing I quoted and same info he's sharing with you here) you can see I have about the same eye socks placed where the old lip used to be on the helmet just like his/how the helmet originally came.

Hi everyone,
Finally I was able to start workong on my helmet.
First of all I have to say that the quality is pretty amazing :).

But I have a few questions:
1. Can I peel the white squares off my lenses or do I have to do anything with the lenses before peeling off?

2. I have seen a few recommendations about cutting the lenses section in the helmet. But what is the best? Do I have to cut the whole hole on the helmet (with the first lip), replace that lip with the lenses socket and cut down the lip of the lenses socket until it looks good?
Or do I have to cut the hole in the helmet to the first lip, cut the whole lip from the socket and put the lenses + socket behind the lip from the helmet?

I hope, I can get sone help :)
Thank you

Hmmmm, do NOT peel the white off the lenses - that is what diffuses the light so they actually light up. Its foggy to look through, but the visibility is actually better than most helmets.

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to peel that off. It's just a layer of film that the acrylic comes with for protection. The etched lines diffuse the light and the blue lens cancels out the red led

You would not be able to see the LEDs on this screen used helmet if there were a film over the lens

My bad - I should look at the thread title first:) I was thinking these were risu's lenses (his have opaque squares). Yes, rocketeer's lenses have opaque grid-lines with clear squares, which is screen accruate. So, YES, peel off the tape:)

Okay that is awesome :) thanks for the help. I will peel them off after I installed them.
But could you also help me with question number two? I don't want to cut too much for the lenses

Ehmy - PM me and I will walk you though what I did.

I finished my helmet just in time for the Cincinnati Comic Expo this weekend and it was a hit! Even Pom called me "Star Lord"!!!!

I ended up using Risu's 40mm lens kit so that the LED's would sit back from the lip a bit further. I spray painted the inside with a black rubber coating. I added a couple of small 12V fans and the red LED on the side of the helmet too....all powered off a 9V battery. The battery lasted about 6 hours, so always bring a spare!

Super happy with the helmet!

IndyGhostbuster and TheRocketeer

Thanks for your input. I hadn‘t so much time to continue with my helmet, but I started with the lenses. I think I found a good way to cut thole (in my mind for me).

My plan is to trim from the inside to the first lip and to make a plain circle in the inside of the helmet.

I won‘t use the lenses sockets as they supposed to be. I will cut them on the inside that they are almost tubes. Then I will glue them on place and put the lenses inside. After that the lenses should be really close to the outside but also with the lip.
I hope everything will work :D but in my mind it feels right :D :D

Re: STAR LORD accurate helmet GOTG Vol 2. with screen lineage open run limited num

I don't know if it was intended to be done like this, but for the eye sockets, I dremeled down (very very carefully) the lip inside of the eye sockets on the helmet, dremeled the inside eye areas flat like in some of the photos above, then carefully sanded the lip on the lighting kit lens tubes, leaving a tiny little lip. They sit in there very nicely now, and the lip I left on the lighting kit lens tube now has replaced the lip that I drememled out of the helmet. The lenses now sit back 1/8th of an inch or so for the correct look. I just glued the lens tubes into the helmet a few minutes ago. My airbrush arrives tomorrow so I will continue to finish the helmet up and then I'll post some pics for reference.

On a related note, what kind of battery is everyone using to power the LED strips? 9V? I assume they should be wired in parallel. I think I'll throw a little latching switch in the circuit also.

What paints did you use on the helmet?? It is pristine. Very nice work.
