Skyrim: Real Steel Nordic Gauntlets

Thanks for the tip otter. I'll have to look into that.

I wasn't super happy with the texture created on the gauntlet, the divots were too far apart. I decided to take the time to make the pattern tighter on the handplates and I really love they way they are coming together. Here's the dry fit of the bottom, outside, and 80% trimmed detail piece.

And the pattern post-weld. The edges were welded, ground down, and then reheated with the torch to make the dull finish uniform.

Go for it Mallic! I look forward to seeing your work. The handplates are 90% done. They just need a little JB weld for the detail cutout. I'm going to do the final curlie Q after I turn in the project.

I think the little divots are a bit too small to really look believable as hammered steel (even though that's how they are in game), but everything else is looking good.

Edit: I think it's one of those cases where something in game doesn't translate too well irl, like some of the strapping on my Thieves Guild didn't translate perfectly.

You can use muriatic acid to remove the mill scale from that steel (BE VERY CAREFUL). It will make it a lot easier to polish(If you want to do that).

Muriatic Acid? oh goodness, I handle that when I work my pool management job in the summer. That stuff is seriously dangerous, especially around chlorine. I like the weathered, blackened look that the steel has now and I'll probably try to push the look a bit farther with a blackwash and maybe some real rust. Thanks though!

I've been hitting this project hard over the last few days and churned out a lot of results. The gauntlets are almost done. They have been totally re-hammered to look as they should and match the handplates. The outer edges were then welded to the bottom layer and ground down with the angle grinder to give the impression that they are once piece. To cover up the shiny raw metal I went back over the whole piece with the oxy-acetylene torch again to blacken it. The pieces were then taken to the drill press and I drilled holes for mounting.

The cowhide shells are finished and dyed, as are the soft gauntlet unders. They still need to be sewn together and given a closure - as well as create the look of leather cording wraps as in the game model.

I love how these look! It would have been amazing if you could have made them as one piece, but I get how that would have been way harder and taken much longer.
Make sure you have sufficient padding under these, as soon as you tell folks they're real steel they will want to hit them.

Thanks again for the comments guys. I've been making strides with finishing up the leather unders for the gauntlets. Everything you see here has been either riveted or contact-cemented together.

The scored side will be attached with velcro once the fixed side is cured.
