Skechers Superhero Promo Costume Pics..UPDATED 10/12 Pic Intense

DAVIDYR1

Official Licensee
His name is Z STRAP and was made for the Skechers 15th anniversary celebration. Character design was provided to us and we were to follow it to the 'T'.
We had a very short amount of time, 6 weeks from start to finish...and mixed in with the rest of the crazy work load we have it was not a simple task to get it all done. My only regret is the lack of time spent documenting the process and the finished suit. We simply should have taken more pics..and gotten more sleep..
The suit was finished and delivered last month but I've just now been given the go ahead to openly post the images so here goes. :)
Sculpted in Chavant NSP Soft ...

These were some 'test fitting' pics. The suit wasnt completely done at this point...it didnt have the tension cords mounted in the crotch area so it just sort of hung there and at this point wasnt 'tucked in'...

Unfortunately I dont have ANY pics of the completely finished suit but I am hoping to get some from the various show dates Skechers has lined up. It basically looks like the pics above, but tighter fitting and with the tension straps added on.
Enjoy!

BRING OUT THE GIMP!

Love the bodysuit!, probably the best body suit sculpt I've seen.

Re: Skechers Superhero Promo Costume Pics..

Great sculpt, as always ! Makes me want to get into sculpting stuff, as always ;)

But the design is, yeah, a bit "Gimp-y". He looks like a villain rather than a superhero, at least to me.

Do you have any shots of the completed suit? Do you have shots of the back of the suit? Was this for a commercial or for a mall mascot? If you know where it will be used, I would like to be able to get a look at it in person.

Re: Skechers Superhero Promo Costume Pics..

As alwasy you have outdone yourself. With this be in a TV spot? More pics please! You are amazing!

Re: Skechers Superhero Promo Costume Pics..

I forgot to ask, do you have shots of the legs sculpted? Were those done on full body casting or did you do that on a separate leg cast? Would be really cool to see those, because of how good the legs look. Did you use different clay for the legs, because they look smoother than the body and face?

Was that done intentionally? Interesting effect having the smoother legs to draw more attention to the upper body. Was this suit glued down to spandex or is this a full silicone suit?

Re: Skechers Superhero Promo Costume Pics..

Nice work, but that's an odd look for a company that uses "caifornia/Hollywood-type" people for their adds. I know you were not behind the design, but I wonder what motivated this look.

Re: Skechers Superhero Promo Costume Pics..

Those look like Batman Begins style legs.
Your Castrol GTX man sculpt you showed last time had recasts of the Clooney Statue legs.

Guessing you don't have time to sculpt original muscles legs??

Of the artwork showing in behind the mask, it shows the collar more like an armor ring fitted and notched for the traps... gugernaught style??

Why was is sculpted to blend in rather then show as a seperate armor plate??

I think the arm pit split came out well and will allow some nice movement of the shoulders without the silcone pulling against itself, but was there an undersuit with matching finish so that it didn't show black under red??

But the buckling in the arms, shoulders, legs, forearms look like they need to be foamed filled to keep them from caving in....

was that done before the suit was sent out finished??

why did they choose to have the belt have a sticker instead of a sculpted
emblem, or a velcro emblem to match the upper logo on the chest????

:confused

Next thing you know SKETCHERS or one of the others will bring back KANGAROOS which had the velcro/zipper pocket in the side of the shoe. Which could hold a quarter but you couldn't get it out~ :cry

I just love the celebration of old things redone with minimal changes and called new. 99% of original things these days are just 99.9% recycled pieces from either a few years ago or recycled 70/80's :thumbsdown

I'll go with CHUCKS or VANS. They still look the same from 15 years ago without calling them new or retro. :thumbsup

Anyways... LOL So whats up with the legs and torso/mask having totally different textures?? :confused

Re: Skechers Superhero Promo Costume Pics..

DB73,
Thanks for the kind words. :)

Jedifyfe,
Thats very kind of you to say. Thanks buddy!:)

ManfromNaboo,
:). You should give sculpting a shot. You never know where it will lead you, besides...it's fun!

Aquaman,
Thanks buddy! Oh and give me a call when you get a moment. We need to talk about DC...

BATS,
As usual Jay, all you try to do in my posts is create doubt and demean the hard work we do around here. How many boards are you banned from again? This is getting old...really old. Dont you have better things to do?
I've had to block you from PM'ing me, block your numerous email accounts, and asked you time and time again to leave me alone. I guess you just dont get it... yet it's so simple, even a caveman would get it...I am tired of you baiting me...do you understand?

I have no problems with constructive criticism, NONE AT ALL but you and your little group of 'pals' seem to be back to your typical and very casual round about way of posting...throw a stone, then run and hide.

Your judgmental attitude is rivaled only by the high and mighty tone to your posts. It's almost as if I have to justify myself or my work to you time and time again.
With respect....You should spend more time on your own work and worry less about mine.

angelfire,
Gabe, you've let Jay influence you too much. I'm a little disappointed in you for jumping in on 'his' bandwagon. Whatever...

Gunthakela,
Thanks buddy, and yea...I didnt have anything to do with the design of the character. Only the execution of the costume.

Re: Skechers Superhero Promo Costume Pics..

DAVIDYR1 - I think it looks great. I only wish I had the $$$ and the area to make half of a torso to make some arm that would flex like this stuff. Kick ASS jorb! Althought, I'm not much for the character design, but that is what the patron, Skechers Inc or whatever, wanted. Since they have the money you give them the results they want. That's how it goes.

So, what do you have planned for the future? Can you even tell use about those projects yet? Good luck and I look forward to seeing and learning from more of your work!

:)

Re: Skechers Superhero Promo Costume Pics..

For starters Gabe has his own mind and doesn't need any influence from me. Both He, Myself and others asked simple questions.

So if you don't have an issue with a real critique then try answering the questions instead of bypassing them.

For the record I am only banned from BOTB for proving LIARS as such and defending a friend as should always be done. I would do that time and time again regardless of the result. Haven't emailed or pm'd you in ages and the last time I did it was to help your sorry ass out with something you were looking for that no one else could provide you.

Theres no tone in my post you just want there to be so you can feel that your being picked on because someone doesn't just fawn all over a piece of your work.

No stone is thrown, just a few questions and observations which you always say you can take.
And where am I hiding??? I'm right here able to answer your post calmly and Cooley. And till waiting
for an answer to questions asked when you can get to them.

So prove that you can take a critique and answer the questions.
Explain what you were thinking, how you were influenced by the client, what you would like to have done differently then what they wanted, how you will do it differently next time, and what you liked best about it, how you came to the finish piece and maybe just maybe you'll show that you can actually take a critique.

Any good artist can go thru these points and answer them regardless of who is asking them. Look at anyone you hold in high regards
and see if that is not true of them, or any other artist here.

Everyone posting there work here everyday is open to critiques and suggestions regardless of the person commenting.
If not then they don't post things out in the open as they either don't like critiques or don't need them.

I have in the past many times given you compliments on your work and I gave you one on an element of this one, but its never enough for you is it. If someone just doesn't love the entire piece then you take it personal and start :cry
Comments just telling you they love something without telling you why or what exactly they love about it does not help an artist grow
or understand their own work better.

If you hate me so much then why to this day do you still use the UD logo that I designed for you. If you have such pationate feelings in the negative towards me wouldn't you disavow anything I did for you??

Whine on all you like or artist up and explain your piece~

Your choice as always.

Re: Skechers Superhero Promo Costume Pics..

These sorts of discussions should be taken off line. I posted when I was hot headed over what was said to me. Not something that needs to be on the boards. The posts here should be said in a professional manner and not a place for people to whine about other people.

Re: Skechers Superhero Promo Costume Pics..

If there comes a day when you can really take questions and a critique of your work you let someone know and I'll happy participate without any tone, malice or anything else you think that might be in there.

You pick the piece regardless of what it is and we'll get a group of your choice together to do a professional critque of it. Not just a COOL or BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN critque. But a real artists critique. Form, Function, and Translation.

That should settle anything in your mind that says I'm out to get you or any other malicious intent. I'd love to hear why you think that since nothing I do will affect your day, how you sculpt, how you think or anything else. I give you no special treatement, I look at each artist the same, and there work I judge on its own merits.

Learn to take emotion out of this and you might actually learn something from those viewing your work.

That is the definition of true artistry.

Re: Skechers Superhero Promo Costume Pics..

WOW... so yeah... um Drama from the board aside...

Great work Dave!

18 days till Dragon con!!!!

See you there!

Re: Skechers Superhero Promo Costume Pics..

Unfounded accusations should not be on the board, it should be done off line. Especially when it comes to professionals. So, I am retracting my comments and will take them off line and deal with the offending parties in person.

Re: Skechers Superhero Promo Costume Pics..

A critique, or constructive criticism is normally given by someone who has the other person's best intentions at heart.
Do you really want us all to believe that that's what's going on here??? If so that's kind of insulting... because people DO offer genuine critiques around here and what you guys are trying to pull is an insult to anyone who really does mean well. C’mon Gabe, your last post sounded paranoid. I called your bluff..give it up already.
Jay on the other hand, well...whatever....I don’t even know why I bothered acknowledging him in the first place…

Keeping personal issues off line. No reason to drag anyone else into these "dramas"

Re: Skechers Superhero Promo Costume Pics..

You always acknowledge me because you have no choice.

I have on many occasions tried to get you to see beyond your limited view even back when you and I were speaking on the phone constantly (neither of us are gay so don't confuse the tone of the statement).
Several other people we both know have tried to help you see beyond your view but you just don't want to and no one can make you. Which is fine.

But to pretend that your above an open critique is what always makes me laugh the hardest.

You could not handle anyone giving you a real critique. Regardless of if I think your a twit or not I have ART in mind for the best intention. Since we have seen you do one or two projects that were outstanding do you honetly feel that your begins suit and this sketcherman are on the same level???

Comments Without Malice if you are brave enough to read it.
Who knows you might learn something and realize that I do have some of your best interests in mind.

1. The legs and torso don't match, and they should have but obviously they were not done together... which makes the torso stand out of place against the clean close lines of the legs. The same was the case on your Castrolman. The legs to not match any of the form or flow of the torsos.
It throws off the finish of the piece.

Next time it would be very helpful to make sure the textures of both the uppers and lowers match to give it the seamless look you tried for on both the above mentioned pieces. Regardless of if the legs were sculpted with or without the torso even being dreamed up yet. Its very common in the industry to use pieces and parts from other sculpts to complete another piece, but they must be made to flow together.

2. the organics of the upper torso are out of place and unfinished around each side of the ceratus muscles. the pectorals are sitting low which causes the abdomen to look short and out of place.

allot of this is due to the form that your sculpting it on. suggestion would be to use a more complete full body form when you sculpt any torso as it will allow you to better see and feel the form of the piece.

I mentioned this back to you when you redid your begins torso for the second and third time. The redo came out no where nearly as well done as your original sculpt which was top notch.

(notice the compliment dink!)

3. with the heavy wrinkles around the edge of the bicep and forearm you
cause any clean flow of the piece to be immediately lost. in combination with the wrinkles on the lateral obliques it causes the body to look slumped and leaning to the right. This made the cod piece look even more sculpted to one side without being equal in form.

4. not sure if the Z on the chest was to be a shoe lace or not... this one doesn't translate thru as such so I take it as a big Z. The lower end of the Z is slopped to one side for no apparent reason. This combined with a few other points takes the forced perspective, and blurs it. Had it been sculpted to be more belt like with slight V'ing of the torso, the flow would be lengthened which also makes the waist look thinner.

one of the best examples of this are both the XMEN and DAREDEVIL suits that the studios made. the forced perspective is making the waist line look thin even in bulky leathers. this was also true in the SPAWN full suit sculpt, which you have a copy of.

5. had the neck ring been sculpted to appear as an armor piece laid over and cored against the traps and colar bone then the blockyness of the colar and neck would not seem completely out of place compared to the artwork and forms of the rest of the sculpt.

I could point out a few more things but I doubt you will take the time to honestly read this. You'll more then likely choose to see this as nothing but some sort of attack against your sanity or some other lame point of reference instead of an honest art critique. Which you say you would appresiate.

With your Begins torso you really showed that form and flow were within your grasp. (yet another compliment dink!) Since then it seems like your grip is tired and loose. If you have taken on more work then you can possibly handle then this could be the reason, but when your art suffers is it really worth it to do quantity over quality??

If you can refocus as you did back then, your work could be more in line with the studio greats of today. Which I know you would like to become, what artist wouldn't want to be one of the best in any field.

So take it for what you will. If I was just out to get you, I would simply call you a Hack and probably throw in a crack about your mama.

So instead of just someone saying COOL you now have some information that could actually benefit you in some way.

Assuming your mind is as open as you say it is~

Re: Skechers Superhero Promo Costume Pics..

Statements made...Thank you very much!

MODS...could you please shut down this thread now?
I´m sick of cool topics going down the road by evolving into a personal bashing chat :(

Thanks, Markus
