Showoff: Picard's Starfleet Briefcase

Hi gang,

here's something new I wanted to show you:

from "Starship Mine"

It was also redressed and used on DS9 as a background piece:

I got it on eBay some time ago. Unfortunately it was painted silver and had the wrong detailing on it. I wanted it to be accurate to the TNG appearance however, so I had to remove the paint with brake fluid (overpainting didn't work), which was a real mess! Then I repainted it black, lined the inside with foam and attached the details.

What do you think?

I assume this is a "found item" any idea what the case was used for originally?

Looks like a typewriter case.
Maybe something from the Canon Typestar series. Similar to this one:
