Showoff: Custom Doctor Who sonic screwdriver.

It seems that, after many years of avoiding the juggernaut that is the Doctor Who franchise, I have finally become fan. How do I know? Well, after catching "Midnight" and "Turn Left," I just spent the last couple of days building a custom sonic screwdriver.

That's probably a sure sign.

It's a "junkbin" project, where I made use of crap I happened to have sitting around; the only parts I bought specifically for the build were the acrylic cabochon for the tip and the rubber bumpon over the activation switch. The body is an old Tiger Electronics lightsaber duel game, which came in the form of a pen shaped sort of like Obi-Wan's TPM lightsaber; the head is a chopped-down Sonicare toothbrush head (the part that fits inside the body), and the neck is parts of several collapsible radio antennas. The tail end is outfitted with the bearings form a 24" bike wheel, a section of plumbing repair coupler, and the plunger from a retractible pen. I'm not sure what the brass bits in the head are; I just had them lying around. I replaced the buttons on the game with capacitors and one LED scavanged from an old circuit board, since the rubber buttons refused to take paint.

It's painted with almosd spray paint, stippled with brown using the end of a stiff brush; the metal is Krylon silver, brass and coppor leaf spray paint.

And of ocurse, it allows quick diagnostics and repair of all major compuer brands:

As luck would have it, the light broke just after I finished taking these pictures. :lol Not sure what's wrong yet, but hopefully I can get it worked out...

Thanks for looking! Now to get one of those Charcater Options nuWho screwdriver toys... :)

that is so dam cool
please have you got any work in progress pics i would love to see them
:)

Unfortunately, no. I didn't think to take any. But I think the extension mechanism may have broken the wires, so I'll need to take the whole thing apart to fix it. I can snap some pictures of that process.

WOW!! Nice job.

I think it's time for a new home built Sonic contest!!!!!

Thanks. :) There have been custom sonic screwdriver contests? How have I missed this? :lol

Extremely Cool!!! Very well done. Just goes to show what you can do with parts lying around.

P.S. Nice to see another Mac user. I love my 24" iMac!

I'm amazed. That's the coolest thing since the updated version on the show. I think yours is actually cooler. I like it!

You have taken this thing way too seriously...your the only person I know to have actually used Sonic device(Sonicare) to make well a sonic device :lol

If there was a contest, you'd get my vote with no questions.

Did you run wires inside the attenna's to connect the LED? When you take it apart to fix it, instead of using wires inside to connect the LED, why not use the the extendable antenna's to complete the circuit? Attach the positive directly to one antenna and the negative to another.

Just an idea. Hope I made sense.

The irony was not lost on me. :lol And thank you. I hope we do get a contest, just because. ;)

Yes I did, and I was thinking much the same thing to remedy it. If I'd planned it properly from the beginning, that's what I would have done, but... As it stands, there's so much hot glue and superglue connecting and filling everything that I'm not sure how easily I could pull the ends of the antennae out and then get them back together again. But I'll take a look at it. :thumbsup

EDIT: Well, I just yanked the head in and out a few times, and now the LED comes on when it's in the closed position. So at least that's something...

It is very nice. I love it. I feel bad that it now no longer lights up all the time, but it is still beautiful.

Aw well, heck, if you can't get it to work right you could always send it to me for repairs...of course, you wouldn't get it back. :lol Damn but that thing rocks. I want one.
