Show Off: Stainless AS Handwheel replica!

I've mentioned these a few times in the past. I was able to get my hands on one and was really dumbfounded by the quality and accuracy of these pieces. The attention to detail is insane--right down to the ribs on the inside of the bottom/tube piece. The 'h' or 'c', and the 'reg' markings were omitted of course, in keeping with the 'idealized' aspect of this replica. The cap is removeable but it's on pretty tight right now and I didn't have time to get it out for these pictures.

I still have to polish mine up, it came in a satin finish. In color this is NOT accurate to the originals, but that's actually one of the things I like about it, it has a dark rich color to the reflections that gives it a more 'serious' presence than an original handwheel (seen at bottom on the right).

I love the fact that someone cared enough to make a highly accurate replica. No corners were cut here, they were very expensive to make. The edge of the cap is rounded nicely to give that complex feel to the groove around it, and the details are very crisp. It's true that the interior details weren't 'necessary', but wow they are very cool.

I agree with you Andres, I also like that color look that it gives out. That is a very nice handwheel you got there, thanks for sharing. :)

Beautiful piece there Serafino. The stainless steel has such a nice color when polished. Color me envious.

Yes, that truly is amazing work. I certainly would like to have one. :)

I don't see, in any of the pictures, the hole for the D-ring. Is this something the maker could add? I can drill plastic and aluminum, but stainless might be a bit tricky for a novice like myself.

I'd like to know this, too....

Ah yeah, well IÂ’m going to have to drill my D-ring hole for myself unfortunately. These pieces had to be sold unfinished, thus the lack of polish and d-ring.

I have a small lathe with a milling attachment and as I recall from my past dabbling in gunsmithing the correct procedure here, for drilling into an angled surface, is to start the hole with a ball end mill. I may try the ball end mill in the drill press first out of laziness though. :)

By the way, FYI these won't be showing up in the JY, as I am not able to front the money to distribute them.

You can PM if you need more info. about that. :)

Sure, with a brush finish. Give it a decent polish and the color discrepancy wouldn't be that obvious.

Well, this piece is certainly impressive. You have the qualitity of durability in both appearance and physical structure along with accuracy. And what better way to complement this addition to your Obi ANH than with a stainless emitter for that extra pristine look.

How much did it cost you?

Well, polished SS looks rich and dark too, as we’ve seen on the Larbel sabers for instance. Yes the polish will make it look more similar overall.

As to a stainless emitter–the whole silvery emitter thing is a mistaken fetish as far as I am concerned. :) The Obi ANH emitter looked black within the movie, the stunt emitter was painted black, and even in the Chronicles photos the emitter is mostly very dark or shades of grey.

I might conceivably use an especially dark grade of SS for emitters if I found an alloy which matched the odd warm grey color of Inconel (Inconel has become sadly expensive due to the rising cost of nickel).

I got mine through a third party, so I’m not exactly sure what the price will be for any remaining ones. Two to three times the typical cost of a replica handwheel is my guess. ;)

That's one beautiful handwheel replica :) :thumbsup

Thanks. I pick it up and stare at it more than my original. :angel

Freaking beautiful piece of work. I would like all my replica parts made with such precision. If I had the money, I would them like this. lol
