Should I hack up my shards?

Hey guys. I trust you all. You are like minded people.

I recently got my shards of narsil. I bought them for a decent price, but without the box and without the certificates. I have no intention of EVER selling them again, and have always just been interested in the shards themselves. If i'd gotten really desperate, I would have just bought a narsil and cut it like some of you have. But I wanted one that looked as nice as the one that was released, and was less of a hassle. So now i have my grail.

And i'm thinking about destroying it.

The thing is, while the plaque is nice and shiny, and mine is in good condition for the most part, I don't really like it. It is bulky, and they are fixed on there. Plus, in the movie they were NEVER displayed like that. They were on the shield and looked nice on display like that. Ideally, when I have the money, i'd like to get an elven shield, flip it upside down, drap some nice cloth over it, and display the shards like that. But to do it, i'd have to cut these shards from the wood and file down the little bits that they are secured with.

I'm worried I might be insane for wanting to do this. So I want your opinions! Do you think it would be cool to do this and display them in the future the way they were in the movie? Or is it a mortal sin to cut up something so "rare" and hard to get?

If it came new in the box, i probably wouldn't ask this. But then again, i probably would at some point down the road.

It's just sitting here, without a box, and taking up space. So it's also a display/storage issue at the moment. I don't really have a place for it to go on the walls that would work/look good/etc. So that would be a plus too. I could store it a LOT easier as little shards and a hilt than as the massive heavy wood chunk that it is right now.

Thoughts? Feedback is much appreciated! :)

go for it dude. i'd rather have a prop than a non working display anyway. lol

Yeah, that is what i was thinking. Every great display i've seen has had them separated from the wood. Makes it feel more like the real shards, not like a "replica" I guess. I kinda like the idea of walking over to them and picking them up and having that same wonder on my face that Boromir had (minus the cut finger) :)

your post went way over my head. I have no clue what shards of narsil are, :lol
but do whatever you think is good/ looks best. :)

How are the shards attached to the shield?
If the shards could be reattached to the UC shield without damaging any of the visible portions of the shield or shards, then by all means, go for it!

If there are screws, pins or holes in the back of the shards, then I think that you should try to reuse them when/if you are constructing a new display. You don't want the pieces to move too much out of place if someone happens to nudge the display case.
I have seen pictures of people displaying the Shards of Narsil under glass inside a coffee table. Perhaps such an arrangement could work for you.

Personally, I never display two versions of what is supposed to be the same item in the movie's universe. If I had Anduril, then I would sell Narsil, or at least not display them both at the same time.

Well, the shards you have would go for a good price...even though you said you'd never sell them, I'd still keep them intact. You just never know what's down the road.

Instead, I'd suggest getting one of those cheap Narsils on eBay and cut them down like another here did awhile back.

Don't feel bad, I had no clue what they were either. Never saw the LOTR's other than the first one. I was so bored during it that I don't remember any of it so I never bothered with the other two films.

Sometning about hairy foot midgets and an over-abundance use of CGI.

I have seen LOTR, Im still not remembering it... Its been a while since I've watched them thou.

*edit.

Ah, just googled narsil, I had no idea you were talking about the sword. yeah, take them off the plaque and display them as they were in the movie.

I'm not positive how they are attached. Looks like the shards themselves actually have pins or something coming out of them into the wood. I'm sure i'd screw the wood up a LOT, if not have to break it and cut it to get the shards off. They are meant to be permanantly on there.

I did see that coffee table idea, and loved it. Would like to do something similar like that.

I know what you mean about not having two of the same prop displayed, but oddly i don't feel that way about these swords. I wouldn't have the regular and museum sting together, you know? But I actually like the idea of Narsil, the shards, and Anduril being together. They are all gonna be part of a big display on my wall. I comissioned Indy Magnoli to do a custom oil painting of the mural by the shards from the movie too, where Isildur is cutting the ring from Saurons hand. That will be over the shards, i'm thinking. It's one of the few instances where I don't mind having a bunch of versions of the same thing. I don't know why, i'm probably just madly in love with that scene.

Cutting down a Narsil could be done, as many have done it on here. But it is also a lot of work, and a mess, and i'd need different equipment. Plus, these are already weathered nicely, and require no effort other than separation.

I'm still thinking, but I don't know, it just seems like the only reason to keep it intact is to sell it later, which as I said, i would probably sell my first born child before I sold it. Which is easier to say, since i have no kids as of yet. :)

Did a knight rider fan just insult the lord of the rings? And then not even be kind enough to offer his opinion on my question?

Wow. Look Bilbo, a Troll!!

:rolleyes

thanks for your opinion! I know if you are not a big LOTR's fan, you probably wouldn't even pick up on them. They are only featured in a few small scenes. But I appreciate that you googled and gave your opinion! :)

Can you post a photo or two?

Is there a felt backing on the plaque?
If there is felt, peel it off and see what you've got.

I'd bet that they cast the shards with studs on the back that go thru in the plaque and then screws thru the back into those studs is what holds them on.

Use the same mounting hardware on your new display.

I say go for it. You're right, more people would recognize it better if it was displayed as a recreation of the scene. That's what I'd do if I had one.

if you hate it and regret it later, you could always sell it to someone as a custom and use the funds to get you another one.

For people wanting photos I believe you can just Google 'United Cutlery Limited Edition Shards of Narsil '

In that case I say go for it. Once cut off, the sides that were attached to the display can always be placed with that side facing down so no one can see it.
