So, I was watching Star Trek Voyager on BBC America tonight, Season 3 Episode 1 "Basics Part 2", the ship had been overrun and the crew deposited on a primative volcanic planet. Any way, the Doctor and a stowaway Voyager crewman were left on board and began to sabotage the ship to help retake it. Now, the Doctor is a hologram and not really considered a threat by Voyagers captors, but the crewman would be so the Doctor help hide him using "an old Maquis trick" where you use a Thoron Generator to emit particles that mask biosignatures.

What's a Thoron Generator look like you ask, like this....

This is supposed to be the screen used prop in better detail...

Look familiar?

I yelped "OBI-WAN!" when I saw it!

Shhh, don't tell the Trekkies! These things are hard enough to find as it is!!!

Looks vaguely like an Obi grenade section. Wonder if they used part of an Icons replica. I'm not familiar enough with its construction to know for sure. Based on when the episode came out, I doubt they knew about the MkI yet.

Maybe they did what most prop masters did back in the day: throw random unknown/unpopular junk together to make a prop:). Worked well then I don't know why people don't do it now;).

I actually love seeing things reused. I spent the first 10 years of my career in theater and always thought that when you were able to make use of stock that was a sign of being a good designer.

Now that I've switched to CG I'm always surprised when people treat reused stuff like it's laziness. I still think of it as clever: you save your resources to be used for where they are really needed by not wasting time redoing stuff that's already been done.
