Ok, so I'm planning a trip soon to my homeland (I was born in OH, live in MN) and besides going to Cedar Point I want to visit as many Shawshank film sites as I can.

I know where the Mansfield prison is and I'll be going there for their tour, but I need to know where Red made his walk to the tree down that gravel road, and where the tree and stone wall is exactly. Can anyone help me?

Hey, if you're coming to Ohio, you may want to stop by the Christmas Story ("you'll shoot your eye out") house, too.

Absolutely. And I'll definitely be posting pics of the trip.

Was the scene with Red and the tree actually shot in Ohio?

I thought the only scenes shot there were the ones in the prison.

Several other shots were filmed in Ohio in and around the Mansfield area. I read or heard that the stone wall leading up to the tree was not there originally. A crew had to build the wall by hand for that shot.

Found some info on it, gotta love the IMDB..

Dude you are gonna love Mansfield.

It is even bigger and more imposing in real-life.

Post some pics of the tree if you take any.

I'm going to see if I can bring a couple of bottles of suds for me and my co-workers to have on the roof :)

I've emailed the State Park about the rock wall and tree.....i'd also like to walk down the gravel road myself if it's in the area, which i assume it is. I'll be bringing my candy tin with me to the tree for some cool photos :)

Don't forget that this was also the prison used in that masterpiece "Tango and Cash"

Have fun on your trip. I'm from Ohio myself, (WAY Southeast though.) I went to the Manfield Prison once to take a tour, but it was closed because they were shooting a film there. I was pretty ticked off. We'd gotten outside the place, and it was INCREDIBLY cool looking.

It was later that I found out that the movie that was shot there was Shawshank, so I didn't stay too awful mad..

;-)

Here is a letter I got from an employee at the State Park where the end scenes were shot of Red finding his way to the old tree...

Hi,

The Shawshank tree is located on private property adjacent to Malabar Farm. You can see the tree from the road. The stone fence was built for the movie. Only a small portion is left. Vandals and the owners have sold it on E-Bay. The first scene of the film was shot in the Pugh Cabin which is on Park Property, also the woods where Morgan Freeman is walking just before he finds the stone fence is the Jungle Brook Trail on Malabar Farm State Park Property. Many of the actors toured the farm and Louis BromfieldÂ’s Mansion during the time they were filming here. It was quite an exciting Summer having all the actors in the area. I think you would enjoy visiting the area.[/b]

Pretty cool info, I'm trying to get contact information on the people that own the land where the tree and fence are located so I can OK being there when I go.....

More to come :)

The woman I dog sit for played the bank teller in the end. Mansfield (at least the prison) is awesome. I believe Godsmack also filmed a video there (the requirement for filming now that instead of paying rent to use it, you have to do historic restoration -- the Shawshank folks didn't do much in the way of rehab).

I enjoyed my trip up there, and even bought a book that may have been used (would that be production used? :p) on the library cart. They also had the tunnel model. Contact the Mansfield organization -- their tourguides new a helluva lot about the film and its locations.

I have to make that trip one of these days. Shawshank is one of my favorite movies.

I visited the Ohio State Reformatory yesterday. Definitely worth the trip (of course I only live about an hour away). Here's some of the movie stuff:

Shawshank:

Andy's tunnel (plexiglass on both sides, so you can't try it out):

Warden Norton's office (someone stole the safe - see the hole to the left):

The sewer Andy crawled through (a river of Hershey syrup):

This was good timing - Jake showed up to say hello:

They also left behind the pictures of Stalin and Lenin:

Holy cow! I had no idea some of this movie was filmed in Ohio. I even have a friend in Upper Sandusky.

Road trip! :D Only about 3 hours away from Mansfield, and we go through Findlay (where I go often to use their dog park :lol).

Great photos!
