Serenity, Jayne's patchs, medals, and pins.

Hey all,

I don't know if to post this here, or in the costuming section. They're costume piece, but I'm not doing the costume, I just want to display them, so I though this was more appropriate, but feel free to move it.

I'm looking for Jayne's patches, pins, and medals from Serenity. I'll post some pics from PSOL, of some of them, but some I don't have pics of. (Like the one on the right sleeve of his "resume" shirt)

I've looked all over for these, and I was only able to find on pin (the Army aviator wings) and one patch (the red, white, and black one on his right shirt pocket,) All the other patch replicas I've found are wrong. Like the one on his left sleeve, clearly says securely, but all the replicas I can find say "Try planet". :( And, his lapel pin, (the one with the trident, gun, and anker) looks like part of the "Navy seal crest", but all the ones I can find, has an eagle on them as well. :( Does anyone know what this stuff is, and/or where I can find them?

Thanks
Jason

the patches on the first pic from left to right are:

Police style Sergeant First Class - (could be military, but im not sure of a blue and gold one, so it might be custom made)

the collar is a Class A Corporal shoulder patch, and the sleeve patch is an Alliance Security patch made for the movie/shows.

^ That site sells Firefly-related patch replicas, but sadly the "resume shirt" patch set is sold out at the moment. Maybe he'd be willing to start a new run if there was enough demand?

The metal thing on his bandoleer is an Ethiopian (or Coptic) cross. The ribbon attached to it comes from a WWII British 1939/1945 Service Medal.

The lapel pin is a U.S. Navy SEAL UDT pin. Here's a link to a place that sells 'em: http://www.navyseals.com/store/SearchResul...x?CategoryID=29

That's great, thanks guys. I just bought one of the crosses on ebay. Man there are a lot of variations of those crosses, I had to look for a long time to find one that looks exactly like the one from the movie, and I'm still probably going to have to make some very tiny alterations to it.

since the actions ended, I thing it's ok for me to post it here (correct me if I'm wrong. :) )

I have my eye on some of the medals, and I just sent an e-mail to the guy that sells the patches to see if he plans on getting them back in.

Ok, every time I fix the link, the boards just keep turning it back to the wrong one. :( I'll just post a pic. :)

I'll have to fix that one corner of the big scwar part, and maybe file out some around the center cross.

great find on the cross. i ended up making my own, since i couldn't find a good match. mine is sculpey, so it's a bit thicker than it should be... any thinner and i was afraid of it breaking.

maybe i'll renew my hunt.

I can't find that style of Corporal epaulet. I've found some US ones, but they're white one black, not gold on black. Plus, on the US epaulets the corporal logo doesn't go all the way to the edge.

Where can I find the correct style.

Yeah, I saw 2 or 3 more on ebay, that were close, but this was the closest. Plus, since most of the auctions said they were hand made, I figured I would never find an exact match.

A scalpy one would be cheeper. I think with shipping and everything mine came to just over $15. (I guess that's not bad, I'm just cheep. :lol)

I did a quick search for the SFC patch and really hadnt found anything.

As for the epaulets, its very likely that they were just custom made. You can get plain black epaulets, and with an embroidery machine, it would be very simple to make these in under 5 mins at a studio. Find a local seamstress and have them do them with their embrodiery machine...probably be about...20 bucks? Might be able to do your SFC patch as well...ive never really seen a sergeant patch that small anywhere

The corporal rank is actually an Army JROTC cadet corporal epaulet.

This site carries Army ROTC/JROTC insigna, so you may want to call them and see if they have them available:

Parade Store

You want the larger size for the male uniform. The female are much shorter.

I was under the impression that they were the same, but it looks like the white/silver on black may be the Army Senior ROTC cadet corporal epaulets. The gold on black are Army JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps), and the embroidery does come all the way to the edge.

Just browsing around some more I came across a rank patch with coloring that looks like it could be a match for the sergeant first class patch:

Combat SFC

These are listed as 1948-1951 combat chevrons, and they appear to be the same dark navy on goldish tan. There are no dimensions listed on the web site. The one on Jayne's shirt is certainly smaller than modern Army rank chevrons. However, I did find a note on a Pentagon web site that said, "The size of the chevrons was changed from 2 inches wide to 3 1/8 inches wide for male personnel per War Department Circular No. 9, dated 5 February 1951." This would seem to add support to this being a possible match.

In any case, I ordered one. I'll let you know what it looks like when it arrives.

Has anyone found a good source for Jayne's "resume" shirt? I've put my patch set onto one that I found in a vintage clothing store, but it's really not even close to accurate...most people think it looks like a Boy Scouts shirt!

The shirt is an odd one. At first I thought it might be a civilain shirt made to look "military style," but I think some kind of a real military shirt has been used as the base. It looks like it's made of the lightweight ripstop cotton used for warm-climate uniforms. It really doesn't look very U.S. in its current form. It's got a few characteristics of some European fatigue shirts. I've seen some near misses in style in some British, Dutch, Austrian and Croatian shirts, but nothing dead on.

I'm going to lean toward a custom job on this one, rather than a simple found shirt. If you look closely at the pockets, it looks like the thread and stitching on the pocket flap is different from the thread and stitching pattern on the pocket itself (and on the rest of the shirt). It also doesn't look to me like the pocket flaps have button holes, but rather have the buttons just sewn on top. I'd say the pocket flaps are replacements for the originals (look at a closeup of the right breast pocket). I've also seen very few military fatigue shirts with a sleeve pocket, so I'm going to guess that it is probably an added on flap, especially since it doesn't line up well with the shoulder. The epaulets look like they may possibly have been added on, too.

i went looking and found one that is pretty close to jayne's. i figured mine is also a little off, so at least i'll have one that's nicer looking and wrong, rather than crappy looking and wrong :)

Perfect! Might have to pick up one of those...Actually, might you sell the extra?

Actually, I've got a friend who is putting together a set as well, so it's already spoken for, I'm afraid.

Re: Serenity, Jayne's patchs, medals, and pins.

the ribbon is a WW2 brittish defence medal. search ebay and you'll find tons of them.

Re: Serenity, Jayne's patchs, medals, and pins.

Thanks, but they already posted that info. In fact, I went looking that day, and ended up winning 36" of the ribben, for less then $12. shipped. :) (I would be happy to share, once I get my jayne medal done.)

I got the Navy pin for like $11.50 shipped. (if anyone needs one, PM me, and I'll point you in the right direction. ;) )

I sent an e-mail to the guy that sells the serenity patch sets , to see if he might have a set, or two, left over, but he never resounded. :(
