Separating display pieces

I'm getting ready for my next scratchbuild, and I'm trying to figure this out before I start.
If I had a model that could separate into different sections, similarly to the Enterprise D, what would be the best way to hold the pieces together so that they could be separated?

I was thinking of magnets, but I wanted to see what else was out there.
