I bought the black series Vader helmet (yeah I know) and had the idea to make a Vader head for it but in theory this could work for any Vader set up.

I have 2 goals with the project:

    1. A solid Shaw likeness.

    2. A Shaw Vader that doesn't look weak and defeated as we see him in ROTJ.

    Reference and WIP:

    shaw_pano.jpg

    vader_movie_ref.jpg

    shaw_vader_wip.jpg

    To do:

    Scars, asymmetry, expression etc.

Excellent project, I've always been a fan of Sebastin Shaw's version as Anakin, I hope you can add the eyebrows :D

haha, I knew the eyebrows would come up! I don't usually agree with George's revisionist stuff, but this is one call he made that I tend to agree with tbh sorry! :)

Very nice work! I would love to have something like this to display my BS Helmet, especially if I could build the thing clay/arm seen in ESB that comes down from the ceiling to suspend his lid.

I never understood the age they landed on for Anakin in ROTJ.

Shaw looked to be bordering on 70 years old but Anakin couldn’t have been older than his mid to late 40’s at the time.

Because they got an older actor to play the de-masked Vader in a time when the prequels weren't even conceived, or fully realized, yet.

If you want to go by what Lucas or what the "lore" says, then you're pretty much lost. I like to think things happened a little longer than what is "official." TPM happens a little bit later than it's stated to have, 10 years to AotC, and then close to another decade to RotS, 6-8 years, then the standard timeline to ANH. It doesn't solve everything but it makes some things easier to digest, in my eyes.

This thing looks fantastic! I've been sprucing up my CR-10 and am also working on a Vader bust. I'm very, very interested in seeing where this goes.

I printed a front 'slice' of the face to evaluate size etc. Please ignore the large ripple at the top of his head, the print lifted from the build plate part way through:

And a fun pic next to a life mask of Cushing:

I think I might push some of the finer details to be stronger. And there's some funky stuff happening with my printer so need to re-level. I also might paint one of the smaller prints to see how its looking in colour.

Awesome project and really like the expression you went with - in the reference pictures I noticed that particular expression and thought that was cool before I noticed you had already decided that should be the look.

I can see you mixed in the ESB scarring on the back of the head with the RotJ top and cheek scarring. Totally understandable as the RotJ rear scars look really lame in comparison. I think you could go a little deeper and more detailed on the rear and cheek scars.

I have been working on a Prowse reveal version with my friend, so it is nice to see a new Sebastian Shaw version with a much more serious look. Would be cool to have it in sixth scale.

Thanks TMG, I'll take a look at your comments. Of course, the beauty of digital is smaller scale version no problem. I've been tinkering with other 1:6 scale projects myself of late.

Officially, Anakin Skywalker was 45 at the time of of his redemption and death: Shaw was 77 at the time of filming.

While they hired a much older actor so the unmaksed Anakin would appear weaker than his depicted age, there was a general consensus until the mid-90s that the Clone Wars and rise of the Empire occurred about 10-15 years earlier than established by the Prequel Trilogy (and were also separate events), and so characters such as Anakin and Obi-Wan were also older than they were in the films: before the prequels, IIRC, Anakin died sometime in his 50s or 60s.

Ack, I hate it when real life gets in the way of stuff I'd much rather be doing. A little bit of an update in that I'm working on a paint test on the smaller test head.

The surface is pretty rough, but bear in mind that when this is 1:1 scale things should be a lot finer.

Thanks for the encouragement people. Quick visual summary of where I am with this project:

Unfortunately due to a MASSIVE life event (not bad, "just" moving countries, US>UK), I won't be able to get back to this for quite some time.

What I'll do however is prep the file and upload it somewhere, would *love* to see what you guys do with it. Just need a little bit of time to optimize the model and make a little readme, upload it somewhere, all that stuff. Next couple of days hopefully. But don't feel shy about pestering me If it slips off my radar, I have some fairly large fish to fry.....

What printer are you printing it with? You're getting really good skin details out of it.

A Makergear M2. Solid machine but unfortunately not *quite* a big enough build volume for a 1:1 human head, so I'll have to split it up.

As stated above due to a colossal life event I have to put this project on hold. But I've just uploaded the file, would love to see what people do with it:

    https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-70270

Futile I know, but please please please do not attempt to profit from it. When that happens I fear my generosity might go out the window. I was inspired by Adam Savage's Maker Faire talk to share more so I plan on doing this again in future. Man, if I had a 3D printer, I'd start this immediately. I don't even have a Vader reveal helmet yet, though do plan a BS one. I'd pay for printing and shipping costs, since you want this to be free, though I'd be happy to pay a retail price.

It is really interesting to study the model up close. So much detail. I had to re-scale it up a bit as it didn't seem true 1:1 scale. Scaled it to the Prowse head I've been working on and the Vader face mask. I can post the measurements I scaled up to here, if you are okay with that.

Did a little something for fun.

I fear it will happen, sooner or later - as there are still many people out there who are not able to print such stuff. They (like me, too) only have two ways to handle it, refrain from having a piece, or pay someone for having it made. So you pay for offered prints and have one, or you don´t and end up with nothing.

And as having no clue about printing, i couldn´t even say where the line would be between a acceptable price for the printing service (and the solely profit on this offered service) without charging anything for the not self designed files, or where they try to get profit from both, printing and your done work.

    :confused

I was using MeshMixer to scale it up and these are the measurements I recorded. The X-Y-Z axis may be different if you open it up in other programs, as they don't always angle the model the same, but at least this could give you an idea of how much to scale it up for full size - at least how I scaled it up.

The original model was the following measurements.
    X - 181.19
    Y - 218.60
    Z - 277.99

Whereas my upscaled model came out at these.
    X - 205
    Y - 247.32
    Z - 314.51

    Vader - Sebastian Shaw - 002.png

I'll go back and watch RotJ to make sure I got it exactly right and if I need to tweak it again to make it more accurate in size to the Vader helmet, I will post it here.

    Again, really great work.
