Sculpting from photo references

I am looking for some tips regarding how to create a realistic sculpture from photo references. I have a pile of photos of the subject helmet I'm trying to recreate and even have a size reference in many of them thanks to a steel rule being placed in the foreground of the photo.

However, I'm struggling to determine accurate dimensions. The photos perspective, and I assume the camera optics, distort the actual size of the object (features in the background will appear smaller due to perspective). I've scoured the net looking for tips to help me ensure I get this right.

Any advice?
