Scratchbuilt mixed-media Patoroch Dreadnought

Here are some pics of my next build, a mixed-media WH40k Dreadnought, again using templates from Eli Patoroch.
I have some more ambitious plans for this one: I need to make a couple of these, but I don't want to build the same template over and over again,
especially given that I want to add little bits and bobs over and above the excellent Patoroch template.

Smack bang in the middle of making molds for all these parts. After trial and (lots of) error, I now make one mold per part, instead of trying to put multiple parts on one sprue.

The molds are 80% complete, I have 4 more pieces to go.
The first two pics show the half-assembled cast model, with some of the original parts where they have not been molded/cast yet. The last pic shows the molds that I have made.

I'm almost finished making molds for this model - the outstanding part is for the claw/hand on the left arm. This part gave me a lot of trouble: even though it is flat on the bottom, I couldn't for the life of me make a block mold, since the fingers trapped air and needed venting.

My handling of the resin has also improved, since I got a cheap scale that can measure parts of a gram. The first parts (feet, legs) were slightly bubbly, the latest parts (upper body, arms) are nice and smooth.

Of course, if I were to be actually spend money on this and buy some proper molding silicone these problems would go away, but whatever. For a build that uses paper and putty for the master, and caulking silicone, hairspray and cheap resin for the molds and casting I call this a success :)

Nice work

That's pretty cool!

Does it belong to any particular chapter or is it just a generic one?

I've got tons of 40K Space Marine stuff that was given to me that has been sitting in boxes for years.

I keep meaning to build it just for hobby's sake. I love the tank and vehicle designs

I used to play Eldar/Dark Eldar back in 2nd edition but have not played since

Thanks Analyzer!

The clones will probably be painted as Blood Ravens, given that the couple of marines I have as well as my scratch-built Land Raider
are already painted in those colors.
The master I am planning to use in a diorama, with less of a focus on a specific chapter.

As for playing, I have also never played. Too busy modelling...
This is all fan-art, I also love the designs.

So if you never get to unpacking those boxes you have, you know where to send them :)

Last night I primed the assembled model, and to no surprise on my part discovered a bunch of small pin holes on the surface.

They are mostly concentrated on the parts I cast first though (ie. the lower body). So looking back I think I know why: I was rushing it when casting the first parts, since I had little experience with the resin but knew I had limited time, which meant mixing the two-part resin frantically. This created a lot of tiny bubbles. Second I probably got the mixing ratio off. I only got a more precise scale last week.

Lessons learned: measure accurately and mix slowly.

Anyways, to fix him up I mixed some glue with paint, and tried to layer it on very thinly. The result is a bit blobby, but I'm not going to be too hard on myself this time. To completely eliminate bubbles I'll have to get a pressure pot system, and that is way over my budget for now.

Next step will be to paint him up as a Bloody Magpie.

Sorry for adding to this thread, but I can't seem to find these templates. If someone could upload them here, I'd be extremely grateful.
