I had about two days to make a Rey Staff for an upcoming event. The staff is made from all found parts at Home Depot. Now that I've finished it I will be making a new one with better parts. Especially the part that looks like the Darth Maul emitter.

Nice work. I'm putting one together over the next two days for Dragon Con. Glad to see it can be done in that timeframe.

Any "gotchas" that you came across when trying to build? I'll be using the instructables home depot build for mine.

I used several of the cheap white shower heads for my staff. I built up most of the areas with craft foam as well. However, for the pieces that look like the Darth Maul Lightsaber emitter I found that Keurig K-Cups offer the correct size and shape to build upon. Once you use the K-cup just empty it out and you can put the craft foam on top to create the correct look. I used to Rustoleum Flex-Dip to seal. Silver Spray Paint to accent. Clear Coat it. Weather it then Clear Coat again.

suggest using 3/4 pvc instead of the 1/2" he used on that build. The 1/2" is going to be very flimsy.

how well did the dowels work to stiffen it?
I have been looking at using that on mine (3/4) because it still has some flex to it.

good to know!.. and your staff came out really nice.

.
.....also you may want to check out "bilge hose" from HD for the threaded areas. I used that on mine and I think it worked pretty well, you can see it in this pic below the glove.
