Scratch Built Delivery Ship 3011AD, The Nylon Gag MK.1 FINISHED.

Re: Scratch Built Red Bull Delivery Ship 3011AD, The Nylon Gag MK.1

Really nice work! Very clean! How do you get the finish on your metal parts so smooth? Specifically the finish on the pistons in post # 143. IN my experience I will cut the pistons and I always have a lip that is left where I cut. So I sand and buff but I can always still make out some marks. Are you machining them?

Thank you guys

Those little brass pieces are contacts taken from multi-pin electronic military style radio connectors, I cut the connector in half and removed the pins from the rubber insert.
All the other tubing is just cut in a mitre block with a small saw and sanded by hand with a fine polishing stick, i usually remove the burr, around the outside edge, with a small 45deg chamfer, inside i use a 90deg countersink tool to remove it.
I do this to every tube i cut ,Brass or Plastic, to make the end look nice and clean. I also usually rub it over with a red very fine Scotch-brite pad to remove any sanding marks.

I don't mind at all, infact i am very flattered that you like them so much.

Here is a link to the Picasa album with every photo i have taken of the build.
Please feel free to do with them what you like.

Just a warning, there are "ALOT" of pictures

Gagster

Thanks so much! And no need to feel flattered, I do this to all the extremely talented artisans I stumble across! I know they are out there it's just you are one of the first I have stumbled across in resent memory.
Anyway, I thought it would be might be OK but I wanted to check with you before I got too carried away.
So far I have downloaded almost 300 pics (I am doing it one page at a time, as each page is completed, so I don't double up. So I will not save any pics from page 7 until page 8 starts, weird but it works for me)
BTW thanks for the "ALOT" of pictures link, I am sure my fellow RPFers will be poring over those also. As the old saying goes there can never be to much of a good thing!
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with now that your new greeblies have arrived! BTW congrats, couldn't have happened to a nicer guy IMHO!
Really appreciate everything, Gagster!
And thanks again, Petseal

Afternoon Everyone,

Just a quick post during my lunch break.

I am really floored by the comments left here, thank you so much guys they really do motivate me alot.

Sooooooooo, on with the MK1. After receiving my donor stash on Monday from Mick J. i've spent this week detailing the rest of the back end.
It's a very time consuming process.

What do you think?

Re: Scratch Built Red Bull Delivery Ship 3011AD, The Nylon Gag MK.1

I just discovered this thread and all I can say is that this is on the level with the Original Star Wars in terms of a cool original design with so many realistic and believable parts.
If this was the late 70's or early 80's you could no doubt get a job at a major hollywood prop/model company.
I can say I like this type of a design or look better than ANYthing CGI.
Keep up the awesome work...

Wow, thank you so much buddy, i appreciate that, if it was the late 70's, early 80's I would have hair :lol

Thanks for the comments my friends, glad you're enjoying this as much as I am.

Next.....

Masking, painting, removing masking, sanding, repainting, apply new masking, painting again, Remasking, re-repainting, removing masking, sanding, repainting, apply new masking, painting again.........you get the idea.
Painting isn't my favourite thing, mainly because i'm very impatient so I usually can't wait and i mess with them before they are dry and then their rubbish.

But, i'm really trying to be patient. :facepalm not easy for me.:confused:cry

Black primer, X-11 chrome silver first, then future, then hairspray, some sea salt and two coats of the X-8 Lemon yellow.

And removed the salt and then attacked them with a tooth pick, i still have to give them washes and some other stuff.

And various other pieces i painted this week.

I have been thinking about the skin layout for some time, I wanted to keep the bottom layer very straight forward and fairly basic, because there will be another layer of some simple tubing runs and small details on top of this layer.

Some areas will definately need a bit of extra detail, but I think i got a good balance, it looks right to me.

That chipped yellow looks great!

Does the beginning of painting mean the bulk of assembly is now done?

Re: Scratch Built Red Bull Delivery Ship 3011AD, The Nylon Gag MK.1

the chipped yellow looks awesome! really excited to see the final paint scheme on this one

Re: Scratch Built Red Bull Delivery Ship 3011AD, The Nylon Gag MK.1

Shut the front door!!! That is so cool! :) Neat trick with the sea salt. I am gonna remember that one... It is looking so great. :) Are you sticking with the standard RedBull color scheme, ( silver, red and metallic blue)? :)

Re: Scratch Built Red Bull Delivery Ship 3011AD, The Nylon Gag MK.1

dude, can you please elaborate on this step? how did you use salt and a toothpick for this effect? mindblowing. i ask as i too need this sort of weathering effect on my project in some time and this is the exact look i was going to go for...your patience is outstanding good sir, i tip my hat to you.

Re: Scratch Built Red Bull Delivery Ship 3011AD, The Nylon Gag MK.1

Yeah! I second for a tutorial!!! :) I would love to know the process.

Its really simple, Black primer (adds a bit of shadow), X-11 crome silver, this is your base colour or the colour of the material you are trying to represent, so in this case, a steel or Aluminium like material, you can paint this rust colour if you are doing a rustbucket vehicle.
You then seal this layer with a layer of future or you could use a clear coat of the paint brand of your choice. Then comes the layer of hair spray, (i use Treseme but thats only because I'm fancy and worth it:lol) i spray straight from the can but you can decant this if you want and use your airbrush, whilst the hairspray is still wet apply your sea salt to the relevant wear areas, then put to one side and allow to completely dry.
Next is you top coat, Tamiya paint is one of the best for this as it seems to chip better than some other brands, I applied two coats only because i was using a very light colour, i think one good coat would be fine.
When everything is dry, wet the top coat this loosens the salt and starts desolving it a bit, when it get softer you can chip of the salt with a tooth pick or any sharp wooden stick (sharpened chop sticks are cool for this), wet and chip some more and wet and chip, and wet.....until you reach the desired amount of chippedness( :confused ) and all of your salt is gone.
Then another top coat of future to seal every thing, then its on to washes, weathering effects......etc.

Hope this helps, this is the first time i've done this myself so i'm no expert, (mods i hope this is ok) i got the technique from this site, have a look.

Basic to Rusting and weathering

This alone is a gem worth it's weight in GOLD, and one I will be using at my earliest opportunity!
What a simple, easy way to make a dramatic, professional looking effect on a model (which would work in ANY genre). I am totally blown away and awed by it's ease and simplicity! I know I'm repeating myself but I can't help it! It's one of those times when you hear something and it just clicks in your head and you say to yourself "Yeah...that makes sense, why didn't I think of that before?"
Well the reason is we all can't be like TheNylonGag! We all have our strengths and weaknesses and he is sharing his strengths with us in this build! So I add my thanks to all the others who have come before me!
Keep up the fantastic work Gag because I don't think you could do it any other way even if you tried, Petseal

OK Gag. I am working out of town, working nights and have very limited time to check the RPF, but I always check your thread and your skills just amaze me every time
