Scenes in Trailers missing in the actual movie. (Iron Man Specific)

Maybe I'm on a different but similar boat, but my major problem is when a studio releases one cut of the film in theaters but then it come out in the stores, certain scenes are either edited or completely missing.

The big one for me was the scene in the Crow where Eric Draven was dressing himself up and wrapped electrical tape around his body. In the theatrical release, I clearly remember him putting on the make up and tape in front of Shelley's vanity but in every cut I've seen in stores that scene is completely gone even though you can see in the film where he is wrapped with electrical tape.

I really liked that scene. :(

Well, I'll bet they opted for the straight jumping out cut because it gives Robert Downey a better reveal. But if they were really going for excellence, why not find an alternate take of when Rourke's father dies and he screams into the air. That scream he delivered was horrible - it sounded like he dropped his bottle.

First one I remember is the joke from the trailer for Major League.

"Name one park that ball wouldn't have been out of."

"Yellowstone."

Funny in the trailer but nowhere in the movie.

They did shoe horn it into the sequel, but that turd couldn't be helped.

I felt the "You complete me scene" didn't really belong at the beginning of the movie. Didn't Tony really show his affection for her towards the end of the movie? The tension was there at the beginning but neither made their emotions clear. If that scene would have been at the end of the movie with Tony landing after rebuilding the Stark Expo it would have fit in my opinion.

I just remembered another BIG missing scene that really bothered me.

And for all the "spoiler weenies" out there,

***SPOILER***, ***SPOILER***, ***SPOILER*** (But not really)

When I saw Terminator: Salvation, In EVERY trailer for the movie that I had seen, there was a scene where John Connor was walking through some sort of ruined and flooded tunnel, (I presume inside the base that they infiltrate in the beginning of the movie), and as he walks down the tunnel and toward the camera, behind him a monstrous T1 rises up from beneath the murky water, its baleful eyes (no pun intended :lol) glowing redly with evil. Connor turns around just in time to see it drawing to its full height behind him, guns at the ready, and then the scene cuts off before we know what happens next or how Connor gets himself out of the jam.

I sat through the entire movie waiting for that stupid scene because I was really curious as to how he was going to single-handedly take out the T1, and OF COURSE, NOTHING! The stupid scene wasn't even in the movie.

Anyone got any more scenes in the trailer and missing in the movie? This is actually kinda fun. :)

Wasn't there a scene in The Lost World trailer where one of the characters moves their flashlight and sees the Jurrassic Park gate? I remember as a lad seeing it in the super bowl trailer, but never saw it in the movie. :lol I couldn't wait to see the gate again. :lol

John Favreau was actually asked about the scene, and he said he felt it didn't flow with the beginning of the movie. So, they changed it to Tony just jumping out.

You would think they would have made that choice before making the trailer not after hmmmm

Which kind of shows you how 'off ' they were with IM2. What it DID flow with was IM1! In IM1 it was clearly established that Tony and Pepper were into each other. Yet, for some reason in IM2 we have to go through alllllll that again as if nothing ever happened in IM1. So yeah, that scene doesn't make sense for the inexplicable 'reset' they did.

At least from my experience, there are scenes in the shooting scripts marked for the trailer. Never underestimate that during editing, a person could find themselves with a big mess unless they remove certain things that worked on the page, but not on film. And of course that could affect what was in the trailer.

The scene you are referring to is actually included in the director's cut of the movie.

Trailers that spoil every funny line and every cool effects shot make me want to scream, so I for one am glad that they are using deleted scenes and non-final cut material for the trailers so i actually have a reason to be at the theatre other than reciting the 5 funniest lines in the movie that have been beaten into my skull with a hammer in the 4 weeks leading up to the movie's release.

I had a Lord of the Rings store in the local mall (when I lived in Georgia). I opened in October the year the Return of the King hit theatres. And they would play the trailer for The Return of the King on the screen in the hallways in the mall. (Their brand new movie theatre was having their grand opening on opening day of ROTK). And it included the speech that Aragorn gave, just before they marched on the Black Gates. It was different than the one in the movie. The one in the trailer was much better. He had the same lines, but said it a different way.

In the case of the LOTR films the motion-picture ad agency responsible for both the print and AV materials worked very closely with the director. Jackson was so impressed by the ROTK trailer that he asked the talented young lady responsible to help cut that film's final battle sequence.

It's one of the rare instances in which a film's producers have acknowledged a trailer house in the final credits.

With regard to footage from trailers not making the final cut of the film, this happens all the time. The most memorable example I can think of (from my non-professional life) is the beat in the teaser trailer for The Empire Strikes Back in which C-3-PO is seen tearing some signage from a door. It's a very quick shot, but for whatever reason it made an impression on me when I saw the trailer, and I missed it in the film.

The teaser trailer for Iron Man was completed months before the final cut of the film was locked. IM 2 underwent MANY last minute editorial changes designed to tighten the pacing and increase the tension. The beat between Pepper and Stark on the plane worked great as a stand-alone moment, but sometimes a director has to sacrifice such moments for the good of the overall film.

And yeah, for the record, I worked on the IM ad campaigns (ditto LOTR).

Cool thread! I was wondering about this myself the other day! and about trailers that spoil too much... has anyone seen the stepfather trailer? :lol its the entire movie in 2 minutes!

That would be the cut Wampa room sequence. 3PO tears down the "danger: Wampas" sign so that stormtroopers will go into the room they keeping them captive, and the Wampas go to town on the imperials.
