Scale Hogwarts and other Potter Structures?

My son is five years old, and he is crazy about trains, and I finally broke down and comitted to building a model railroad in our basement (for me to play with, and for the 5-yr-old, and for our second child (currently three months old) to play with eventually, too).

Seeing all of the television broadcasts of the Potter films (leading up to Phoenix's debut) made me think, "Wow, I wonder if there are existing HO, N, or Z scale Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, Kings Cross, Hagrid Hut, and other items out there."

My initial research has turned up mostly toy-looking things that are kinda in scale but not exactly correct.

I reside in the U.S. and the folks that built http://www.realisticmodelling.com/images/hogwarts_castle.jpg are in the U.K."

Bachman makes an HO (1:87 scale) Olton Hall, and Hornby makes a few other cheesy toy-like structures, but I was wondering if anyone has found anything better.

I hope I can construct a model railroad in some of the space in our unfinished basement, and it will probably be 1:87.1 scale (I would prefer 1:160, but I haven’t seen an N-scale Olton Hall). I think Marklin even makes a 1:220 Hogwarts Express, so that wouldn’t be out of the question, either.

I think it would be cool to create model railroad layout with not only Hogwarts castle and grounds, but also King's Cross Station (with the as-seen-on-film St. Pancras ediface), the 21-arch Glenfinnan viaduct, as well as Hogsmeade as shown in the films, the Whomping Willow from Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, (and maybe even a bit of Virginia Water, Surrey).

Does anyone own the Noble Hogwarts sculpt? How accurate is it, and does it come close to 1:220 scale?

Has anyone ever found a source of even any scaled plans for any of the structures?

Sorry, I haven't seen blueprints (there were some production blueprints for sale on eBay a while ago, but they won't help here). If you're kitbashing from existing kits, the European kit makers like Marklin will probably provide a better baseline than the US ones. They make castles, cathedrels, etc. you can use as parts of Hogwarts (if not the whole kit, parts like buttresses, windows, and doors will come in handy). You can also buy styrene sheets of stone texture to form your own walls and wrap around cylinders to make towers.

You can probably create a close approximation of Hogwarts just using screen grabs and production pics (which are freely available online and in your DVD collection). Block out the basic buildings and courtyards, and you'll be well on your way to establishing a recognizable skyline.

If you need more exact measurements, track down someone with the Noble Hogwarts sculpture.

Re: 1:87.1 or 1: 220 Scale Hogwarts and other Potter Structures?

Is this the right forum for my inquiry?

:confused
yes it is, HO scale would be the way to go. Ive been doing model railroading for 25 years give or take. Its just a matter of trying to see whats out there, vs building the buildings or details yourself. Marklin train products are from Germany and is one the best brands to get. Ive seen the trains in HO scale, a O scale version is coming out this fall. You might want to try a a local hobbyshop and see what if anything they might have coming out, otherwise it will have to be scratchbuilt. Pm me if you like if you need help in constructing the layout.

Yep, correct forum although I don't know if many will do scale railroad here.

You can look at english model RR sites for building that would match up to the Hogwarts scenery. Bachman, Hornby and a few others made a HO scale train although they are a bit expensive on the used market now. Marklin made on with all the bells and whistles but it was darn expensive.

Lionel is supopose to be coming out with a beautiful set this fall. The larger scales Lionel is known for.

1:87.1 or 1: 220 Scale Hogwarts and other Potter Structures?

Thanks all,

Does the Marklin version of the Hogwarts Express run on three rails, and have its own proprietary DCC-like system? I would love to be able to do standard HO with US DCC.

Since my intial quest began, I have found a few sources of helpful info (I have not yet begun to do my own screen-capping).

In case anyone else is interested in this...

You've turned up some great preproduction art there. I loved the neatly mowed lawns at Hogwarts, complete with the contrasting grass strips created by a Muggle lawn mower (I guess if it's left to Filch, that's the only option). ;)

Note that the layout of Hogwarts has changed slightly with each new film. For example, they added a new bridge and location for the Whomping Willow in HP3, and the owlry in HP4.

A buddy of mine who works at one of our Local hobby shops says theres a woman who used to come in and get supplies to work on her hogwarts castle she claimed to be building. Unfortunately, she has'nt been in in quite a while. I'd love to see what she's done.

Anything you come up with I'd love to take a look at.

I'm becoming VERY interested in starting an overhead map of the castle and grounds myself!... hmmmm...

Ahh, keep me posted if you undertake such a project!

Also, I just found that a 1:148 (Jubilee Class) locomotive is in the works that is DCC ready and will run on N guage track, and rather approximates the look of the "actual" Hogwarts (Olton Hall Class) as well as most of the other (Castle Class) model trains on the market.

It appears as though one might need:

Graham Farish:

One [Catalog Number 372-477] Jubilee 5682 'Trafalgar' Fowler Tender LMS Crimson Loco

Three (1st./3rd.) [
Catalog Number 374-850] Stanier Vestibule Composites LMS Crimson Lake

One [
Catalog Number 374-825] Stanier Brake LMS Crimson Lake

(Although, depending upon what Catalog numbers 374-830, 374-845, 374-840, and 374-835 look like, these might be more appropriate.) I am sure photos of these will be available soon.

Noble Collection Hogwarts School

Yes, that is a sweet dollhouse. I'd seen it before, but not the shops and stairs!

I think N-scale might work best for the space I have.

Most of the other models I will use will likely be 1:160 (i.e. one inch on the model represents 13feet,4inches of height and one inch of the real Hogwarts would be 0.0063inches on the model and one foot would be modeled at 0.075 inches (or another way to say it is, it takes 6.33mm to model 1 meter of subject)if I have dome my math correctly). The Hogwarts Express train I will be using will be in 1:148 scale (i.e. it takes .0812inches to model 1 foot of structure).

The Noble website says their Hogwarts model "Measures approximately 13 inches in height," but it looks like most of that is comprised of cliffs, and the actual Hogwarts is about 7 inches at best. That would make the actual Hogwarts peak come close to looking 93 feet high next to other American N (1:160) scale structures-- and about 86 feet tall compared to the British N-gauge (1:148) locomotive.

A) Does anyone own the Noble Collection Hogwarts, and if so, how tall is just the Hogwarts portion of it? How accurate is this sculpt based on what we see in the movie and what is in the books? This sculpture has no way of internal lighting, correct?

B) Does anyone know if J.K. Rowling ever lists the height of Hogwarts in any of the books? How tall is the Astronomy Tower? Does she mention the height of any particular landmarks of the school that can be used to extrapolate other information about relative height?

Re: Noble Collection Hogwarts School

Well,
Hmm… if one 110-story building of the World Trade Center was 1,353 feet tall, then each floor worked out to be about 12.3 ft tall. That could make the seven-story part of Hogwarts 86.1 feet tall all by itself, without even considering the towers, right?

I built Hogwarts in HO scale for a modular railroad.

cgraham: Which brand of the Hogwarts Express did you use, and do you think it is better than the others that are out there?

Oh, the train is from a UK Bachmann OO set I found on e-bay. But the layout is 2 corner modules that form a big "U" shape for integration with other modules. My Hogwarts will be at a train show in Timonium, MD Feb 5-6 2011 as part of an 84' X 30' club layout <www.marrsweb.org>
