This looks great! I can't wait to get mine :)

One thing I've been curiuos about... what keeps the water in the tank and from flowing into the barrel of the gun? Is it just the felt?

Gotcha, thanks! Very clever engineering there!

Re: Working Sandman Gun / Loading, Cleaning, How To Tips! (Ton-o-pics)

Seeing this beautifully engineered piece never gets old. :love

Thanks for the very helpful illustrated tips, Rylo. :thumbsup

Rylo,

Assuming you have just cleanded the gun and have loaded it per above instructions, approximately how many 'bursts' can one expect to fire before reloading? (Of course, it would depend on how long each trigger pull is held.)

As has been said before, I can never get enough pictures of these guns.

It's pornography for geeks!

EDIT: Will be updating a main thread on this topic at a later date. When the board switched servers a number of the photos and text got scrambled leaving this one pretty much worthless.

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the tank or an adjustment somewhere else in the system, but in the video the first gun creates a very loud crack when fired while the other two have a much more throaty muffled sound. What influences the type of sound the gun makes when fired?

Great question, PsyBear. I'd like to know more about this, too. :) :thumbsup

"Class? Anyone?"

(raises hand and waves from the back)

I believe the wire on the side of the handle used to be for charging the old "gates battery" that the film guns used to light the glow plug. The terminals were oriented sideways and one of the battery terminals stuck out of the side plate where the blue / black wire is visible.

One of the changes you made to your replicas (one of many improvements) changed the old "gates" to two "AA" or "AAA" sized batteries to power the glow plug in the front where the calcium carbide / water mix creates the flare. On most replicas, this blue / black wire is simply decorative.

Am I close?

"Ted,

That all depends on the grade/quality of the Calcium Carbide and how fast you get the cap down. An average load should give you 4 or 5 strong bursts with 3 to 4 smaller shots like you see in the film.

You can tell when they're shooting in the film that the tanks are almost empty; rather weak, small starbursts of flame."

______

Rylo,

Thanks for the reply.

I remember you saying in the past that the "shots" in the film must have been very weak loads. And looking at the film recently, compared to your gun test videos, I see the clear difference between a properly loaded "Rylo" firing and what often made it to the screen in 1976.

Yes, I think the sound will vary with the quantity of CC and water mixed and also with the quality of CC.....that last one is very important as you find some very poor quality CC sometimes :confused
I bought mine in specialized shop, where they sell CC for miners or speleologists. But now, most of the production comes from Eastern countries and it's not a very good quality.

We mustn't forget that in the movie, they also had some soldering product to make the green flames..."Jet Glo Flux" or something like that if I remember correctly. But it was really bad for the entire valve system and inside barrel.

What would be interesting is to know how the whole thing needs to be ventilated to have the proper air flow !!!...explaining the venturi holes in the little brass barrel and the correct nozzle exit hole diameter....
